IHSA ZONE 8 - REGION 1

Photo
Stanford University has finished in the top four at three of four IHSA Nationals events held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania since 2006. On May 4th Stanford scored 14 of their 22 points earned at 2018 IHSA Nationals, with Claire Womack earning five of them by way of a second in team walk-trot-canter equitation. From Brooklyn, New York, Womack is seen here with her parents at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex just outside the in-gate to the large arena shortly after earning her red ribbon. Stanford's 22 points overall made them the number three hunter seat team in the nation for 2017-18, trailing only champion Skidmore College (with 30 points) and a Savannah College of Art and Design team (with 28) which had won the previous three championships.

We have done as much research as possible and as best we can tell Jordan Miles (on right) is the first-ever Reedley College rider to compete at an IHSA Nationals event. From Raymond, California, Miles earned the most combined open reining and open rail points within Region 1 for the 2017-18 season and thus automatically advanced to Nationals to compete in the individual AQHA High Point Open Rider competition. It was a historic year in more ways than one as head coach Desi Molyneux (on left) guided Reedley to their first - ever Region Championship. Molyneux and Miles are seen here on the first balcony of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex large arena in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 5th prior to Miles' ride in the rail or horsemanship phase of the individual high point competition.

We wish we remembered to ask these two which one was the winner of the walk-trot class at Region 1 Regionals. For we know that at Zone 8 Zones in Stanford, California on April 7th Michelle Villasenor of Sonoma State University (on left) won the individual walk-trot division while teammate Courtney Debrunner (on right) was second. This meant that both Villasenor (from Los Angeles; at the time a sophomore) and Debrunner (from Santa Rosa, California, and a senior at the time) would again go forward together one more time. Seen here on the second balcony of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex large arena in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 4th, Debrunner would be out of the ribbons at Nationals but Villasenor would place third in the individual walk-trot. Sonoma State has sent forward a rider from Zones each of the past three seasons, including Michelle's older sister Sarah, who was ninth in individual walk-trot-canter at 2016 IHSA Nationals.

Though she is under 35 Stanford University assistant coach Tina Davey (on left) has been involved with four different IHSA programs. She rode for the University of California at Santa Cruz as an undergraduate (and was a co-captain). Then she founded and coached the University of California at Irvine team prior to becoming director of riding at Mississippi College starting with the 2012-13 season. Then in the fall of 2016 Davey joined the Stanford Coaching staff. Davey is seen here with Jillian Rogers of the Cardinal. From Santa Barbara, California, Rogers had just won the team walk-trot division at IHSA Nationals when this photo was taken (we are embarrassed that we did not get the horse's name). A visit to the Stanford Equestrian page within the traditional Stanford University site reveals there are at least eight coaches and a half dozen clinicians involved with the Stanford program accross the English, Western and Dressage disciplines. The superlative instruction has resulted in 13 consecutive hunter seat region titles (with all 13 teams winning the Zone 8 Zones competition), seven western region titles and probably a few non-IHSA related moments of glory for the Dressage team.
