IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 5

During the 2021-22 season Zone 7, Region 5 set an IHSA record when Washington University in St. Louis became the fifth different team in the region to win a region title in the five most recent seasons. In 2022-23 the team which started that streak, Kansas State University, won the Zone 7, Region 5 hunter seat region title to keep their IHSA all-time streak of 'no consecutive repeats' going though it was not a sixth different team in six seasons. Though the Wildcats did not advance a full team to '23 Nationals Jillian Camp won the individual novice equitation class at Zones on April 2nd to punch her ticket to IHSA Nationals in Lexington. Illinois State University was the Region 5 high point hunter seat team during the covid-shortened 2019-20 season. A freshman on that time, Thomas Mundall, would continue his senior year by placing second in individual intermediate over fences at Zone 7 Zones on April 1st. From Carol Stream, Illinois, Mundall (pictured) was the first Region 5 rider at '23 Zones to advance through to Nationals, as the individual intermediate fences was the second class of the day at Zones (and again at Nationals where this photo was taken).

Like Camp of K-State Lorey Golden of Washington University in St. Louis also won a class at Zones. Coincidentally from St. Louis, Missouri, Golden was first in a field of nine individual limit over fences riders on April 1st. Golden is seen here waiting for horse draw for the same division at IHSA Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky on May 4th. Golden rode for the Bears during their region championship season in 2021-22.

While Golden of WUISL hails from the big city on the eastern side of Missouri Lauren Johnson of Missouri State University hails from the big city on the western side of the show-me-state. Johnson (on left) hails from Kansas City, Missouri, and she is seen here in the mounting area within AllTech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park with head coach Natalie Mook prior to the start of individual open reining at IHSA Nationals on May 7th. Johnson would close out her senior year with the Bears (yes the same mascot as WUISL) by placing sixth in the individual open reining. Johnson was the only Region 5 western rider Not from Black Hawk College to compete at 2023 IHSA Nationals. If you are looking for Black Hawk Western Rider Photos they will soon be found on our Zone 7, Region 4 page, as the western numbers grew in the off-season creating the need for a true Zone 7, Region 4 Western Region as had been the case prior to the pandemic.
