IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 5

Photo
Though Black Hawk College may have the defending National Champion Western Team we put an Iowa State photo at the top of the page since the Cyclones host the first Region 5 shows of the 2022-23 season. From Clear Lake, Iowa, Natalie Rolling (on right) closed out her senior year by placing ninth in the nation in individual level I western horsemanship on May 8th. Level I was the last class held at 2022 IHSA Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Cyclones and head coach Elizabeth Smith (on left) will welcome Region 5 to the Story County Fairgrounds in Nevada, Iowa on September 24th for the first Region 5 western show of the new season.

Black Hawk will be one of the many Region 5 schools with a western team in attendance on September 24th. In 2022-23 the Region 5 representative at IHSA Nationals in the individual AQHA High Point Open Rider Competition was Josie Spratt of Black Hawk (pictured). From Purcell, Oklahoma, Spratt not only finished sixth out of 24 entries in the individual AQHA Spratt also finished fifth in team open reining, the first western team class held at '22 Nationals. Thus Spratt scored the first five of Black Hawk's 48 team points which eventually resulted in the school from Galva, Illinois capturing their first-ever IHSA National Championship.

While Spratt had the most combined open reining and rail points in Region 5 last season, Olivia Rigdon of Kansas State University had the most combined open flat and fences points. From Overland Park, Kansas, 2022 graduate Rigdon (on right, with Wildcats head coach Ann White) was second in the Cacchione Class at Zone 7 Zones in Lubbock, Texas on April 10th. Rigdon was also the blue ribbon winner in individual open over fences earlier that day to earn the right to ride in two classes at 2022 IHSA Nationals. If you turn the clock back to 2017 when the Wildcats were Region 5 high point hunter seat team Region 5 has started a streak that is currently an all-time unique IHSA record. Northern Illinois (in 2018), Truman State (in 2019), Illinois State (in 2020) and Washington University in St. Louis (in 2022) have followed with Region 5 hunter seat Region Titles. This means five different teams have won the region over five consecutive seasons omitting the cancelled 2020-21 season. At no time has this happened in any other IHSA region over the 55-year history of the organization. And there are a few Region 5 schools that did not win a region title in that span which in theory could extend that streak to six in 2022-23!

Black Hawk College gradually closed the gap to climb into first place after all seven team classes to win the 2022 Western Team National Championship. In the sixth team class Haley Bucher (pictured) placed third in team rookie horsemanship. From Washington, Illinois, Bucher is one of many riders we photographed inside the trophy room underneath the stands at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

For several decades Dr. Gary Webb and his wife Sue were the co-head coaches of the Missouri State equestrian team. But now that both have retired Natalie Mook (on left) is head coach of the Bears (and a former member of the West Texas A and M team). On the right is Lauren Johnson, who kicked off the Galva, Illinois Semifinal on March 19th by winning the individual ranch riding class. From Kansas City, Missouri, Johnson posed for this photo with Mook just outside the outgate inside the Equine Arena at IHSA Nationals on May 6th shortly before concluding her junior year with a fourth in individual ranch riding in Harrisburg.

While much has been written about Black Hawk becoming the first-ever two-year school to win an IHSA Western National Championship their individual riders also did very well at 2022 IHSA Nationals. Head coach Bekah Irish (on left, a former Black Hawk and former University of Findlay rider with two years of competition at each school) poses with Kayla Jiras, at the time a freshman from Tiffin, Iowa after she placed second in individual beginner horsemanship late in the day on May 8th. The very next class was the team open western class that Anna Wilhelm (not pictured) won to clinch the National Championship for Black Hawk.
