IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 5

Last season we had a hunter seat photo of Sophie Karney of Missouri State University posted on this page. But in 2024-25 Karney (on left) helped the Bears' western team capture their first-ever Region Title. A senior from Louisa, Virginia, Karney is seen here with head coach Natalie Mook prior to earning third place in individual ranch riding at 2025 IHSA Nationals in Mill Spring, North Carolina on May 2nd. This ranch class was in fact the very first western class held over the course of three days at Nationals.

Another Region 5 rider from an eastern state showed early in the day at IHSA Nationals on May 2nd. She is Jessie Claire Goodwin of Washington University in St. Louis. A senior from Branford, Connecticut, Goodwin placed tenth in individual open over fences in what was the first hunter seat class of the three-day weekend. Goodwin (pictured) actually competed shortly before Karney as the English ring within the Tryon International Equestrian Center indoor got going a few minutes ahead of the Western ring. After having finished on top in the field of five at Zone 7 Zones on March 29th Goodwin also represented Region 5 at Nationals in the Cacchione Cup Competition. The first of 24 riders to compete over the jumps, Goodwin finished with the eighth best score in the Cacchione over-fences phase. Goodwin earned a combined judges' score of "83."

For the first time in program history the University of Kansas advanced a rider to IHSA Nationals. Madison Slade (center) won the individual intermediate over fences at Zone 7 Zones in Roscoe, Illinois on March 29th to become the first Jayhawk ever to qualify for an IHSA Nationals event. A larger number of riders than usual rode in at least one English and one Western class at 2025 IHSA Nationals. At least six riders had to bring two very different outfits to Tryon including Sofia Reisinger of Missouri State University. A day after placing out of the ribbons in individual novice equitation Reisinger is seen here on May 3rd after having placed ninth in individual rookie western horsemanship to close out her sophomore year. From Plano, Texas Reisinger was the only non-senior from Region 5 to compete at the year-end IHSA Nationals event.
