IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 3

Only one Zone 7, Region 3 team advanced a hunter seat rider through to 2023 IHSA Nationals and that school advanced three riders through including Sadie Schmid (pictured). From Randolph, Wisconsin, Schmid rides for the University of Wisconsin at River Falls, and she is seen here in the trophy room at AllTech Arena in Lexington, Kentucky after placing seventh in individual introductory equitation last May 5th. The trophy room has a unique photo of horses poking their heads out of their stalls that is also an optical illusion, as you can stand anywhere in the room and see straight down the aisle between the sets of horse stalls. Schmid is standing right in the middle of this photo. An we would be remiss if we did not mention Schmid's seventh was the best Region 3 hunter seat ribbon earned at '23 Nationals.

In 2022-23 North Dakota State University captured their seventh Western Region Title in program history. The Bison are coached by Tara Swanson (on right), who is seen here on the floor of AllTech Arena in Lexington, Kentucky last May 7th with Kaylee Barrieau. From Minnetrista, Minnesota, Barrieau was second in individual beginner western horsemanship at the Florida Semifinal on March 18th to qualify for IHSA Nationals. If you look above Barrieau you can see the skyboxes at AllTech Arena. Sometimes teams rent these boxes though most just rent a ringside table as they are much closer and less expensive. And we would be remiss if we did not mention Barrieau closed out her junior year with a sixth in individual beginner at Nationals later that day.

In 2022-23 former Auburn University NCEA rider Haley Pembroke (on left) succeeded Kayla Hanson as head coach of the University of Minnesota at Crookston. And Belle Sand of the Golden Eagles (on right) is Pembroke's first rider to win a class at a Semifinal event. From Spicer, Minnesota, Sand won the individual open reining in Florida on March 18th. A month and a half later Sand nearly did it again, closing out her sophomore year with a second in the NRHA-sponsored individual open reining at Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky on May 7th.

University of Wisconsin at River Falls head coach Janie Huot forwarded to us this photo of Sydney Hill of the Falcons (but somehow most of Hill's hat was cropped out). Hill made UWRF team history during the fall of 2023 when she won all seven of the Region 3 open reining classes held during the semester. The Falcon senior from Princeton, Minnesota was tenth at 2023 IHSA Nationals in the individual High Point Open Rider competition which means Hill was the tenth best IHSA Western Rider in the country for the season. With one show remaining the Falcons lead the Region 3 western team standings by 13 points in an attempt to take back the Region Title they won in '22 that North Dakota State took from them in '23.
