IHSA ZONE 7 - REGION 3

Photo
From Rolette, North Dakota, Hannah Strong of North Dakota State University (on right) closed out her senior year by placing sixth in the individual Western High Point Open Rider Competiton at 2026 IHSA Nationals in Mill Spring, North Carolina on May 3rd. However this photo of Strong and Bison head coach Tara Swanson is from 2025 IHSA Nationals. On that occasion Strong competed in individual ranch riding but with the same result, claiming sixth place one year and two days prior to the high point rider awards ceremony. In 2026 the Bison finished on top of both the Region 3 Hunter Seat and Western Team Standings.

This photo is also from 2025 Nationals, and it makes for a good explaination about the differences between the IHSA Regular Season Scoring System which is in place through Zones and the system in place for Nationals since 2019. Save for the Nationals team competition riders receive seven points for first, five points for second, four points for third all the way down to a point for sixth place. However at IHSA Nationals points are awarded all the way down to tenth place. First is equal to ten points, second brings home eight, third is worth a lucky seven, fourth gets you six all the way down to a half point for tenth place. During the 2024-25 season the University of Wisconsin at River Falls were hunter seat Region Champions for the first time since 2001-02. And head coach Rachael Walker (on left) guided the Falcons to second place at 2025 Zone 7 Zones to field a full English team at an IHSA Nationals event for the first time in program history (also the first time ever that a Zone 7, Region 3 hunter seat team had survived Zones to compete at Nationals). On day two of 2025 Nationals Jerzie Lerch (on right) made River Falls team history by placing tenth in team limit over fences to put the Falcons on the scoreboard with a half point. For now Lerch is the only River Falls rider to place top ten at Nationals in a hunter seat team class, as none of the other Falcons' team riders could match or exceed Lerch's effort. From Juda, Wisconsin, Lerch closed out her senior year with a ninth in individual limit over fences at 2026 Zone 7 Zones on March 28th.

While Strong represented Region 3 in the individual Western High Point this season, Madison Wojcek of the University of Minnesota at Crookston (on right) had the honor a year earlier. Seen here with Golden Eagles head coach Haley Pembroke, Wojcek placed ninth in the multi-phased division which determines the top IHSA Western Rider each season. At the time a sophomore from Bremerton, Washington, Wojcek is the most recent Minnesota-Crookston rider to compete at an IHSA event.
