IHSA ZONE 5 - REGION 4

Photo
A year ago Texas State University at San Marcos won their first-ever Region Title. A year later the Bobcats now have two consecutive Region Titles! Head coach Katherine Deichmann (on right) is seen here with Taylor Cromack, a senior from Tomball, Texas who was the leading Region 4 open rider for 2025-26 and competed in the Cacchione Cup class at Zones on March 28th. We wish we remembered to ask Deichmann how many seasons she has now coached the Bobcats, which is likely now over a decade.

At Zone 5 Zones in Hardeeville, South Carolina six different Region 4 entries who closed out the 2025-26 season as open riders competed in at least one individual or team class. And two of them rode for Louisiana State University in individual open over fences. Seen here with Tigers head coach Leaf Boswell (center) are Isabel Beltran (on left) and and Caitlin Wilkes. A senior from Jupiter, Florida, Beltran closed out four years at the Baton Rouge school with a seventh while Wilkes (from Austin, Texas) was tenth in the same open fences class to close out her sophomore year.

Another Region 4 open rider entered at Zones on March 28th was Marissa Lance of the University of Texas at Austin (on left). Seen here with head coach Allison Nguyen, the junior from Katy, Texas was tenth in individual open on the flat late in the day at the Savannah College of Art & Design-hosted event. Texas - Austin was one of six Region 4 schools to advance at least one rider to Zones.

Six of the nine Region 4 schools to sign up for IHSA membership in 2025-26 are located in the state of Texas including Schreiner University. The Mountaineers had two riders entered at '26 Zones, with one of them being Katelyn Maher (center). A senior from Corona, California, Maher is seen here between head coach Ashley Brune (on right, who hails from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) and Assistant Coach Megan Mitchell prior to placing eighth in individual limit over fences. Schreiner is the westernmost Zone 5, Region 4 school (several schools in Texas located north and west of Schreiner compete in Zone 7, Region 2) and as such is the westernmost school in all of Zone 5 in 2025-26.

From Kingwood, Texas, Kinsey Hebisen (on right) was the first of two Sam Houston State University riders to compete at Zone 5 Zones. Seen here with head coach Karlie Leblanc, Hebisen was sixth in individual intermediate over fences to conclude her sophomore year. The city of Houston is named for Sam Houston, the first and third president of the Republic of Texas, who was later the seventh governor of Texas. However Sam Houston resided in Huntsville, Texas, the home of Sam Houston State University which is just over 70 miles north of Houston.

She sang the Star-Spangled Banner at the last three IHSA Nationals events. In 2025-26 Hannah Valigura (on left) became the head coach of the Texas A & M University IHSA hunter seat team. Valigura can claim that two of her three riders entered had the highest placings of any Zone 5, Region 4 rider at Zones on March 28th. On the right is Emma Satine, a senior from Dripping Springs, Texas who was the second of two Aggies to place third that day. After Brielle Fischer was third in individual intermediate over fences Satine was third in individual limit flat. No Region 4 rider made the top two to get through to '26 Nationals, yet ironically the third Aggie to show at Zones has the most recent ride of any Region 4 rider at a Nationals event. Cameron Sanchez (not pictured) was seventh in the final class of the day, the individual open on the flat. A year ago Sanchez won individual intermediate flat at Zones to show in the same division at '25 Nationals.
