Last season Kutztown University finished eighth out of ten Region 4 hunter seat teams with 103 points. Through six shows this season the Golden Bears are much improved, sitting in fifth place while averaging 13 points a show (which puts them on a pace to equal last year's total by the eighth show). Natalie Hoeksema of Kutztown (pictured) has faired well in her intermediate flat classes of late. The junior from Riegelsville, Pennsylvania has won two of her last three and needs just seven points in the division to qualify for Regionals two seasons in a row.

"Kaiza" poses for a photo with her human friend Katelyn Langford of the University of Scranton and Scranton head coach Carrie Sisson during the September 24th East Stroudsburg University show. A sophomore from Temple, Pennsylvania, Langford won the first intermediate fences class held this season and has since pointed out of that division as well as novice flat. It is the second time coaching in the IHSA for Sisson, a one-time Centenary College rider who coached Wilkes University when that school had a team roughly seven years ago. Scranton sits in fourth place overall with 96 points through six shows.
From Cape May, New Jersey, Rebecca Thompson of Moravian College (pictured) won her novice flat class at the October 2nd Lafayette/Lehigh show to qualify for Regionals. Seen here at the October 16th Bloomsburg show, Thompson is now seven points from classing out of novice fences and thus would ride twice at Regionals.
What can we say about Lafayette College teammates Rebecca Bender (on left) and Kayla Birde (on right)? Well for starters Bender is one of many IHSA riders from the NYC Borough of Brooklyn this writer has encountered so far this season (nearly ten of them!). Bender is also third in the Region 4 hunter seat open rider standings. Meanwhile Birde (a senior from Rumson, New Jersey) has qualified for Regionals in both hunter seat intermediate divisions. And we would be remiss if we forgot to mention that the Leopards won on opening day 34-31 and again on October 8th 41-30 over Rutgers each time.
From Fawn Grove, Pennsylvania, Bloomsburg University junior Carley Walters poses in front of a banner commemorating the IHSA's 50th anniversary that the Bloomsburg team painted! The Huskies who painted it did a spectacular job as it looks like a printed banner from a distance. Walters won her advanced walk-trot-canter class on October 16th marking the third time in six tries she has earned the blue ribbon this season. Five Huskies won blue ribbons as Bloomsburg scored 40 or more points for the second time this season.
It took until the fifth show of the season but Rutgers University finally climbed into first place within the Region 4 hunter seat team standings. With Bloomsburg hosting back-to-backs the sixth show arrived a day later, and the Scarlet Knights defeated the hosts by a point 41-40 to move four points ahead of the Huskies overall. Emma Brown of Rutgers is seen here with "Minnie" after the duo put in a winning ride in novice flat on September 24th. The freshman from Matawan, New Jersey won twice on October 16th, and with no one else able to earn a pair of blue ribbons that day Brown was high point rider.
