ZONE 8, REGION 2 REGIONALS RESULTS

Del Mar, CA - Though they may have been edged out by neighboring University of San Diego for high point hunter seat team in 2003-04, the University of California at San Diego won four of six english classes held at Zone 8, Region 2 Regionals on March 13th. Linda Torres won both open flat and intermediate fences while triton teammates Marce Evans (novice fences) and Shannon Ward (advanced walk-trot-canter) also won blue ribbons. Two western classes were held, with Cal Poly-Pomona riders winning both.

Though they only started competing in the IHSA this season, UCLA had two riders in today's show. Intermediate flat rider Sarah Phaklides became the first bruin rider to win a class at an IHSA Regional show while open rider Michelle Brownstein was fourth in open flat.

Because several of the divisions produced no more than two Regional Qualifiers there was no need to hold classes for either open western division, advanced western, novice western, open fences or novice flat (novice western was only introduced by the IHSA at the beginning of the current season). Riders in these divisions advanced directly to Zone 8 Zones, to be held April 3rd and 4th at the College of Southern Idaho. The schedule at Zones calls for Individual English and Team Western Classes to take place on Saturday the 3rd while Individual Western and Team English Classes will take place the next day. Thus Cal Poly-Pomona will have a full western team in action on Saturday as will the University of San Diego have a full english team in action on Sunday in Twin Falls, Idaho.
