After leading the team competition for most of the day,
the Cal Poly - Pomona Broncos placed second thanks to the third tiebreaker,
which is points over fences. With both of the top two teams advancing from
Zone 8 Zones this season, the Broncos will field a full hunter seat team at
IHSA Nationals for the first time since 2002 (Photo courtesy Jen Earles/Cal
Poly - Pomona Equestrian Team).
CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS PREVAIL IN ZONES SHOW FOR THE AGES
Twin Falls, ID - With over 500 hunter seat riders registered within Zone 8
for 2007-08 the top two hunter seat teams will be advancing to IHSA Nationals
for only the second time in the history of the Zone (the other being in 2006).
It took nine hours and many re-rides, but when it was over two teams from the
regions made up mostly of California schools had survived Zone 8 Zones at the
College of Southern Idahos' bright yellow Expo Center.
Stanford University, which had won the previous two Zone 8 Zones
team competitions, was again the winner. However though the Cardinal scored
40 points to lead the field, anything less than a first in team open flat
(which concluded the schedule) would have meant elimination. The Cardinal
entered the final class of the day in a three-way tie for second, as the
University of Montana Western, Cal Poly - Pomona and Stanford all trailed
Oregon State 34-33 at the time.
"I was very proud of my riders for battling it out all day long," said
Stanford University Head Coach Vanessa Bartsch a few days later. "It was
certainly a test of mental and physical endurance as we arrived at the show
grounds at 6am and didn't leave until after 5pm. The luck of the draw was a
huge part of the day and every team had it's share of very challenging rides.
The points stayed very close all day long - I think we were only in the lead
for one class - and under immense pressure Sophomore Sarah Scharf did an
amazing job in her first post season appearance with the Cardinal in the last
class of the day (team open flat). What we didn't tell her going into the
class was that we basically needed a win to go to Nationals, as in the event
of a tie we would loose. She pulled out a great ride and won the class,
which thereby won the show! But my hats are off to every coach and team up
there as it certainly could have gone any way and I was really impressed by
the camaraderie between other schools and riders in our Zone."
Hailey Quirk of Cal Poly - Pomona had to finish second or higher in team
open flat to assure the Broncos of reserve status, which she did with a red
ribbon. Pomona, which was the only team never to occupy sole possession of
last place at today's show, survived by virtue of the IHSA's tiebreaker
system. The first tiebreaker is the number of blue ribbons (all four teams
earned two). The Second tiebreaker is the number of red ribbons (both Pomona
and Oregon State had two each). The Third tiebreaker is points over fences.
Hailey Quirk won the first team class of the day for the Broncos, capturing
a blue ribbon in open fences, while teammate Cassie Jackson did likewise in
team novice fences a short time later. Though both scored 38 points the two
blue ribbons over fences gave Cal Poly - Pomona the edge over Oregon State.
The Beavers spent the first three divisions of the day in feast/famine
mode, as a win for Katie Pratt in team intermediate fences was sandwiched in
between a pair of fourths. Then Hayley McGuire won team walk-trot-canter and
suddenly Oregon State was in second. The Beavers held that honor until
Stanford went from last to a tie for second in the sixth team class, as
Margaux Bennett won team novice flat for the Cardinal. However Oregon State
would take their only lead of the day when Meghann Rhynard-Geil was second in
team intermediate flat. That division was won by Toni Henneman of Montana
Western, which moved the Bulldogs into a three-way tie for second through
seven divisions. Montana Westerns' only other blue ribbon came from Ali
Lund, who won team walk-trot between McGuire and Bennett's chart-topping
efforts. Though the Expo Center is a familiar site to Montana Western, the
Bulldogs did not have much of a home-field advantage, as they were only
techincally as high as second in the team competition once
following Henneman's blue ribbon.
It was a good day individually for the schools in Regions 1 and 2 as well.
The University of California at Los Angeles, or simply UCLA as they are
known to the masses, earned three individual rides at the upcoming Nationals
show only a few miles east of campus. Jenny Matthews won individual
intermediate flat for the Bruins while teammate Caroline Macioszek won
individual walk-trot-canter. Region 2 Cacchione qualifier Savannah Cook was
second to Cal Poly - Pomona's Quirk in individual open fences, the division
which started the show. Quirk was runner-up herself in individual open flat
while the University of California at San Diegos' Kim Cullip won individual
novice flat, giving Region 2 six individual undergraduate rides at the
National show. Aside from a full Stanford team and Cacchione rider Brittany
Henson of Nevada - Reno, four riders in five divisions will represent
Region 1 at Nationals in the hunter seat classes. Hensons' teammate Erin
Broussard bested Quirk in individual open flat while placing second in
individual intermediate fences. Lisa Fowler of the University of California
at Davis won individual walk-trot while Cal Poly - San Luis Obispos' Kaitlin
Spak was second to Cullip in individual novice flat. Stanford has one
individual qualifier in Kate Fernoff, who was second in individual novice
over fences.
Region 3 mangaged three undergraduate individual qualifiers, with two
coming from Montana Western. Elizabeth Behrens was second to Matthews in
intermediate flat while Alex Evans was secodn to Fowler in walk-trot. Nikki
Medrud is the first Rocky Mountain College rider to reach Nationals since
2006 when the entire Rocky Mountain team advanced as the runner-up to
Stanford in the Zone 8 team competition. Medrud won the individual novice
over fences.
Region 4 advanced two individual riders, one more than last season.
Christina Bernards was second to Macioszak in individual walk-trot-canter
while Kacie Crooks is the first rider in the short history of the University
of British Columbia team to qualify for Nationals. Crooks first in
individual intermediate over fences makes her the only rider from a Canadian
school to qualify for IHSA Nationals this season.
Three regions will be represented by alumni riders, though technically one
was an undergraduate at a school located in the Northeast. Utah State Head
Coach and Morrisville State College graduate Rebecca Lewis was known more for
her abilities as a western rider while an undergraduate in Upstate New York,
but for the first time she will compete at IHSA Nationals in a hunter seat
division. Lewis won the alumni fences, coming in one place higher than 2006
Zone 8, Region 2 Cacchione qualifier Sarah Titlow. 2006 Pepperdine graduate
Titlow is one of two former Cacchione riders to advance on this day. Kat
Bechtel of Stanford, who represented Region 1 last season in the Cacchione
class, won the alumni flat while 2007 Cal Poly - Pomona graduate Dana
Montgomery was the runner-up.
Many who qualified for Nationals are happy that the final IHSA show of
2007-08 is on the West Coast. Bartsch, who was part of the 1996
Stanford team which advanced out of what was one big region made up of
California, Oregon and Washington State at the time, is among the happiest
to see Nationals at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center after a 12-year
absence.
"For now I'm just excited to have our English and Western team's going to
Nationals together for the first time in history! While this will be our
third consecutive English Zone Championship, this is the Western team's first
birth - quite exciting, especially while helping host the first West Coast
Nationals since I was still a student on the team in '96 (Let alone the
thrill of being able to finally DRIVE to a post season event)! After having a
travel schedule over the past few years of Zones in Oregon and Idaho, Semi's
in Ohio and North Carolina and Nationals in Penn and Mass we are elated not
to have the long, expensive flights and jet lag this year!"
