IHSA ZONE 6 - REGION 2

Photo
Taylor Casanta of Ohio State University (center) made Buckeye program history by being the first Western rider on the team to show at IHSA Nationals since the program was created in the mid-1980's to be coached there by someone without the last name "Griffith." Ollie and Debbie Griffith, who coached the Buckeyes from 1985 to 2022, retired at the end of last season. In their place are 2019 Ohio State graduate Abbie Noble (on right) and assistant coach Miranda Roesel (on left, a 2021 Wilmington College graduate). It was an interesting season for the Buckeyes, as Wilimington stayed even with Ohio State in the Western team standings through the fall. But the Buckeyes got it done in early 2023, winning the region as they have always done and keeping their streak of Nationals appearances alive every year since the 1986-87 season. Casanta, a junior from Columbiana, Ohio, was eighth in individual ranch riding on May 5th at Altech Arena in Lexington, Kentucky to claim the Buckeyes' first western ribbon at '23 Nationals.

Otterbein University brought horses to Alltech Arena in Lexington for 2023 IHSA Nationals and Cardinals co-coach Lindsay Yinger (on right) schooled a few of them prior to posing with Riley Seielstad on May 4th. A senior from Albion, New York, Seielstad put Otterbein on the scoreboard with a sixth in team limit over fences that day. At any other IHSA show this would mean one point for the Cardinals. But at IHSA Nationals the point system is different, with ten points awarded for first place, eight for second down to a half point for tenth. Therefore Seielstad scored four of Otterbein's 16.5 points which resulted in tenth place overall.

Though seven schools showed in Zone 6, Region 2 during the 2022-23 season only two were able to advance a rider through to IHSA Nationals. Ohio State was the only Region 2 school with both western and hunter seat riders entered in Lexington. And Haylie Wynne was the only Ohio State University hunter seat rider to reach Nationals. A senior from Brewster, New York (with one remaining semester), Wynne won individual intermediate on the flat at Zone 6 Zones on April 1st in Concord, Ohio. Wynne (on right) is seen here with Buckeyes hunter seat coach Allison Applegett after placing ninth in the division at IHSA Nationals on May 4th.

Elizabeth Orosz of Otterbein University (pictured) says the best way to remember the pronunciation of her last name is to take the word "Chorus" and remove the "Ch." Orosz rode in three classes during her final IHSA Nationals. The senior from Columbus, Ohio took home her best ribbon in the first class of the entire four day event. Orosz was third in individual open over fences (and she is seen here waiting for the horse draw for that division on May 4th). Otterbein was Region 2 high point hunter seat team again in 2022-23, extending their school record to six straight Region Titles.

How might you pronounce Ohio State University's Rylee Mirabile's last name? It is pronounced "Mer-ah-bull-lee!" A senior from Darien, Connecticut, Mirabile is seen here sitting in the stands at Alltech Arena in Lexington on May 7th prior to horse draw for the next-to-last class of the weekend, the individual beginner western horsemanship. Mirabile went on to place fourth in the division, the second-best ribbon of the weekend for any Buckeye rider behind Nigel Lancaster's second in team open reining.
