Though this picture is from her first IHSA horse show in Fall
2002, Lauren Cannon of Berry College did not earn any white ribbons at 2004 Zone 5
Zones, only blue ones. Berry hosted Zones this time, a two-day affair at Gunby
Equestrian Center on April 3rd and 4th.
BERRY HIGH POINT TEAM IN HUNTER SEAT & STOCK SEAT
Rome, GA - Berry College was the only school in the Zone with both a full hunter seat
team and stock seat team in attendance. And when the show was over Berry had the high
point team in each discipline. The vikings won five of the eight hunter seat team
classes and four of six stock seat team classes in the process.
Lauren Cannon was one of two riders to pick up a pair of blue ribbons. The Berry
sophomore was first in team intermediate flat and individual novice flat. Savannah
College of Art & Design sophomore Jordan Siegal was first in individual open flat and
team open flat, while University of the South's Hannah Schremser was first in individual
novice fences and second in individual novice flat. With Siegal second to Tara Brothers
of South Carolina in individual open fences, Siegal and Schremser were the only
individual riders who earned two rides at Nationals for their 'individual' efforts.
Other individual highlights included Catherine Respess becoming the first rider in
the history of Emory's program advancing to Nationals (second in individual intermediate
flat) and Ashley Kinsey becoming the first undergraduate hunter seat rider from Clemson
to reach Nationals since 2000 (second to Schremser in individual novice fences).
Savannah College of Art & Design had a full hunter seat team at Zones for the first
time in school history. Though Siegal was second early on in team open fences, the bees
were third out of three in three of the next four classes. Siegal's first in team open
flat was their lone team blue ribbon. Though SCAD was the odd hunter seat team out this
season, head coach Courtney Petersen was optimistic. "Regional Champions was a first
for SCAD. Hopefully next year, with another year under our belt, we will be ready!"
The stock seat team competition was pretty much decided through five classes. Berry
riders won four of the first five, while MTSU was often second and Florida, unable to
win a team class up to that point, locked into third. Region 2 Stock Seat High Point
Rider Katie Leonard won team open reining to start the team classes, and also placed second
in individual open reining to advance to Nationals in that division. Individual
qualifiers among the western were scatterred, as eight different schools advanced at
least one undergraduate rider to Nationals. Amy Humble of Berry came just shy of being
the only rider in Zone 5 to qualify for Nationals individually in stock seat and get to
ride in the Hunter Seat Team Competition. Alas, Humble was third in individual
advanced western.
There were no alumni western classes at Zones this season, as only two riders
within the Zone qualified for each alumni stock seat division. The good news is
that all of these qualifiers go directly to IHSA Nationals May 6th through 9th in
nearby Murfreesboro, Tennessee. MTSU graduate Allison Brannon qualified in both
stock seat divisions, while Murray State graduate Krista Dausman qualified in
reining and University of Kentucky graduate Laura Harbour qualified in rail. In
contrast, the hunter seat riders did have to ride for it at Zones. Clemson graduate
Diana Thompson (who started the year as Diana
Davis) will have two rides at Nationals, by virtue of her first in alumni flat and
second over alumni fences. Joining Thompson will be Vanderbilt alumni Mawghan
McCabe, who was first in alumni fences, and Wesleyan College graduate Jasmyn Jones,
second in alumni flat and one of three Wesleyan alumni to lead the way throughout
the season in Region 3.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Nine months after this article was placed on-line, Region 1 Alumni
Representative Marianne England noticed an error, in that alumni classes were
actually held at Zone 5 Zones, though the copy of the program that was sent to
Campus Equestrian did not include the alumni classes. England explains: "There
were two qualifiers from two regions that competed. Allison Brannon from MTSU
competed in both rail and reining, and was second in both those classes. Krista
Dausmann of Murray State competed in Reining, and won that Zone class, and Laura
Harbour of University of Kentucky competed in and won the Alumni rail class at
Zones. There had always been qualifiers from Region 1 in rail, but the reining
points were undecided until the last second since only five alumni reining classes
were held during the entire season. The riders had to wait until the National
Director agreed to lower the points requirement."
"We'll win the Versatility award yet!": Besides Humble there were several other
riders within the Zone who rode english and western within the two-day event.
Though none made it to Nationals in both disciplines, some may be eligible for the
Versatility Award in 2005, given to an IHSA rider who has qualified for Nationals
in three individual classes, with at least one in hunter seat and one in stock seat.
The rider must be novice or higher in hunter seat and advanced or higher in stock
seat to earn this award, which is sponsored by the AQHA. According to Berry head
coach Margaret Knight, the vikings had eight riders in 2003-04 who rode both
english and western, and with riders such as De Ann Ital at Murray State and
several at the University of the South who ride in both disciplines the award could
possibly be presented to a Zone 5 rider next season.
