MARY WASHINGTON WINS SECOND OF TWO UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND ENGLISH SHOWS; HOSTS TAKE TWO WESTERN AT DAYBREAK

Springdale, MD - Led by Erika Rozek, who was reserve high point rider, Mary Washington won the second of two hunter seat shows hosted by the University of Maryland over the October 11th/12th weekend. Combined with Saturday's point total, the eagles lead the Zone 4, Region 1 hunter seat team standings by a 70-64 margin over the College of William & Mary. Earlier in the day, the University of Maryland staged two western shows in a short period of time, with the hosts doubling the point total of their nearest rival in each. Beginner western rider Diana Phillips was the only equiterp to win her class in each stock seat show. Maryland holds a 40-15 lead over their closest western challenger at the moment, St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Mary Washington can also claim the early region 1 Cacchione leader in senior Jessica Mangum, who won both of her open classes on Saturday while placing second over fences and third on the flat on Sunday. Mangum was also high point rider on Saturday, edging Carrie Venneman of high point team William & Mary in a ride-off. The tribe had won by a point over the eagles on Saturday, but finished seven back on Sunday, tied for fourth.

First things first: The stock seat shows were held before the hunter seat show, and were completed in less than two hours. Rather than hold one complete show followed by another, the classes for each stock seat show were mixed so that certain divisions for each were over at a certain time. This meant that Ms. Judy Mante, the western judge for show number one, sat in the judge's chair for two classes (beginner western horsemanship and intermediate western horsemanship), then got up to let Ms. Millie Welsh judge the same two divisions for show number two! The two took turns and before you knew it, the stock seat was complete. In that time, the University of Maryland won three of four undergraduate classes in the first show and two of four in the second. Phillips, Meaghan McDermott (advanced western) and Monica Lilly (novice western) won for Maryland in show one while Phillips and Maggie Stanton (novice western) came up winners in show two. Diana Zrimsek came up with seven of St. Mary's nine points in show two by winning advanced western, while Hood College was a successful western team of one today, as Jenna Stark won both sections of intermediate western horsemanship. Maryland scored 20 points in each show, 13 better than Hood in show one and 11 better than St. Mary's in show two. Even the alumni got into the act as Lyndi Prettyman-Caruso, Trisha Prettyman and last-minute fill-in Jackie Falkowski-Schmitter rode in four stock seat classes. Prettyman-Caruso won both alumni classes in the so-called first show while younger sister Trisha prevailed in both show two alumni rounds (For the record, there was no open reining or open horsemanship, as there are currently not enough riders to bring the class total to three).

The stock seat shows, scheduled to start at 8AM, began at 8:33AM and ended at 10:23AM. It was quarter to twelve when novice flat kicked off day two of the hunter seat. Maggie Johnson won the first class, one of three times during the day that William & Mary riders would take first place. Four sections of novice flat went to as many schools, as Kasie Dassoulas (from Maryland), Sharon Rakowski (from Chirstopher Newport) and Kane Ramsey (from Mary Washington) would follow Johnson's lead. Rozek won her section of novice fences, while Goucher and Sweet Briar won their first blue ribbons of the day in other novice fences classes. Laquel Couzzo won section 4B for the gophers and Theresa Jorgenson won 4C for the vixens.

Goucher and Sweet Briar proceeded to split the intermediate flat. Rachel Saltz took the first section while Sweet Briar freshman Jessica Leonardi won her first IHSA blue ribbon in the second. It would not be the last time Leonardi would finish first during the day. Michael Hurwitz picked up the only blue ribbon of the day for Richmond in the first section of intermediate fences while Jennie Towner picked up the third of five blue ribbons for the gophers in the other section.

Same name but not related: Corrine Davies, a freshman from Harrisonburg, VA won the first of three sections of open flat. Davies is unbeaten in the division since enrolling at Sweet Briar, having won the same class a day earlier. Second in the next class was Goucher's Lydia Davies, but apparently the two are not related. Open flat section B went to Mount Saint Mary's freshman Anna Andersen, whose older sister Julia was a member of the team from 1997-2001. Unlike the first two classes an upperclassman and not a freshman came away a winner as Jill Wilson of William & Mary took section 7C. Section A of open fences went to Goucher freshman Maisy Grassei while teammate Lydia Davies won section B to assure seven points for the gophers on their point card. Davies also joined the ride-off with Hurwitz, Leonardi and Rozek, all with a first and a second on the day up to this point.

Mary Washington proceeded to win two of three advanced walk-trot-canter classes. Brianna Egan and Kelly Yeamans won for the eagles, while Sweet Briar's Kristi Hanley won the middle section. Diana Phillips nearly became the only undergraduate rider all day to win both a western and an english class, but the Maryland sophomore was only second in beginner walk-trot-canter to Aurora Drawdy of Christopher Newport. Chirstina Sheetz of William & Mary won section A of walk-trot, while Zrimsek's roomate Stephanie Thompson won the last class of the day listed in the program, the Saint Mary's junior first in section B.

The ride-off took place at quarter after six, with Leonardi edging Rozek, Hurwitz and Lydia Davies as the sun set over Clay Hill Stables. Two days of showing left the team race up for grabs, with the eagles six up on the tribe, nine up on the gophers and eighteen up on the vixens. Mangun ended the day two up on Lydia Davies and four up on Zrimsek and Corrine Davies in the Cacchione.

Feels like the first time: A quick check of the Zone 4, Region 1 fall show schedule may leave many confused as to when the season started. St. Mary's was supposed to host a show September 28th, but a hurricane the previous week forced cancelation of that event. Mount St. Mary's did hold a show the following Sunday, but it was later learned that the judge for that show was not an approved judge and thus the results would have to be scrapped. The Maryland shows thus denote the first official shows of the season for the region, with five more still to come.

Bill has immediate impact: While the new twenty dollar bill found its way into circulation last week, Mount Holyoke graduate Andrea Bill found her way into the Zone 4, Region 1 alumni divisions. Over the past two seasons, Bill has placed third or higher in each of her four IHSA Nationals alumni classes, including first last season in alumni flat. Bill proved to be consistant in her region debut, placing first in both alumni flat classes over the weekend. Though Bill only placed fifth each day in alumni fences, the rest of the region "mixed it up" over the two days in that division, meaning that Bill is only six behind former Maryland riders Trisha Prettyman and Daphne Boogaard for the alumni jumping lead. It is a good thing that Bill is riding in her new region, as there are currently no alumni showing in her old home, Zone 1, Region 3.
