Co-Coach Michael Dowling after placing first in Intermediate Fences at Regionals.
Capell later placed third in Intermediate Flat, becoming one of four Cyclone
riders to reach Zone 2 Zones in two divisions.
Ten Cyclones head toward Port Jervis
Readington, NJ - At Zone 2 regional shows, the top three riders in each class
advance to Zone 2 Zones. This means that at best, only 24 undergraduate and six
alumni riders will see their seasons continue on an individual basis. At today's
Zone 2, Region 1 Regionals, the Centenary Cyclones could claim ten riders who
placed third or higher, with four riders doing so twice. Held on a what was the
only sunny day in a five-day stretch, Centenary claimed 14 of the 24 slots at
Zones, with Kristen Schwieger (open flat and fences), Lisa Capell (intermediate
flat and fences), Tim Leuzarder (same divisions as Capell) and Amy Gregonis
(novice flat and fences) all securing two rides at New Hope Farm in Port Jervis,
NY on April 13th. The other fourteen teams in the region combined for only ten
of the opportunities at Zones, while Centenary advanced a rider in each of the
eight divisions. The cyclones achieved similar success at Regionals last season,
securing fourteen rides at zones in 2002.
Jamie Walsh of Pace was the only rider from another school to advance twice,
doing so in each intermediate division. Walsh's teammate Pam Roura survived in
the walk-trot division. Five other region 1 schools will be represented at Zone
2 Zones: Jared Marinos (open fences) and Kate Briney (walk-trot) from the United
States Military Academy; Madeline Breskin (open fences) and Julie Chapgier
(novice fences) from New York University; Emily Vaughan (novice flat) of Drew
University; Danielle Schepps (walk-trot-canter) of Manhattanville College, and
Karen Rodgers (open flat) of Marist College, who placed second in the final
class of the afternoon to Schwieger.
The alumni classes did not offer much drama, as only three riders qualified in
each division, thus each was assured a trip to Zones seven days later. Drew
graduate Sandra Sayre won both alumni divisions, while Dominique Vonsiatsky of
New York University and Robin Mustaciuolo of the State University of New York at
Morrisville flip-flopped second and third, with Mustaciuolo second in alumni flat
and Vonsiatsky one better in alumni fences.
Zone 2 Zones will be hosted by region 1 this season, and with any luck a large
number of teams will be represented at 2003 IHSA Nationals when Zones come to an
end. Last season only Centenary and the United States Military Academy from
region 1 advanced undergraduate
riders to Nationals through Zone 2 Zones (smaller teams throughout the zone were
unsuccessful that day, with Cazenovia, Saint Lawrence, Skidmore, Centenary and
USMA the only schools represented at Nationals in hunter seat). Centenary College
(along with Colorado State) set a new IHSA record this season by winning their
region for a fourteenth consecutive year (Southern Seminary College had the old
record, with thirteen regional championships from 1979-1992), and if their effort
at regionals is any indication of the remainder of the Spring then many of these
Zone qualifiers will be headed to Murfreesboro, Tennessee in early May to
compete at Nationals.
