We wish we had a western-looking photo of Centenary College freshman Randi Cashman
(on right) but you will have to believe us when we say she is the Region 1 individual AQHA Trophy
representative at 2008 IHSA Nationals. Though Randi Cashman rides for Centenary, her Mother Sherry
Cashman (on left) and Father Peter Cashman (not pictured) coach the USMA Western Team which will
represent Zone 2, Region 1 at Western Semifinals in Laurinburg, North Carolina on March 29th and 30th.
USMA TAKES THE ROAD TO LAURINBURG WESTERN SEMIFINALS
Highland Falls, NY - The March 2rd Western Show held at Morgan
Farm and hosted by the United States Military Academy finished
with USMA holding its' lead and sending a full team to SemiFinals.
The final regular season western competition also produced several
individual qualifiers, including Centenary's Randi Cashman in both
open horsemanship and reining; Stevens' Institutes' Jamie Fishbein
also in open horsemanship and reining; the USMA's Nic Walker in
beginner western horsemanship and Raquel Rascon also of the USMA
in novice western horsemanship. Cashman will also represent the
region at Nationals in the individual AQHA Trophy division.
The winner of the March 2nd show was USMA, followed by
Centenary and Stevens.
I had the opportunity to speak with the captains of USMA,
Centenary and Stevens to gain a perspective on the season as
they saw it. The common response was a pride for teamwork.
This is especially notable since the equestrian sport is
usually a solitary one with individuals competing against
each other. USMA has three captains: Lene Baxter, Nic
Walker and Corinne Noble. They looked back at a great year
with a particularly great day (They won!) and are looking
forward to the competition at Semifinals in Laurinburg,
North Carolina and hopefully Nationals. Stevens’ captain
Jamie Fishbein was proudest of the teams’ beginner riders.
She felt the entire team brought what they learned to the
show and did their best. Stevens started with two riders
and now is fully competitive with riders in all classes.
Randi Cashman said her team did well this year and was
especially pleased with the majority of English riders
gone Western. They’re hoping for varsity status next season.
There are now three solid teams in the region, all with
high hopes for next season. Anyone else?
