Centenary College junior Rachel Samuels came up big at Zone 2 Zones on April 7th, winning team intermediate flat, individual novice fences and earning second place in individual novice flat.

RESULTS FROM ZONE 2 ZONES CHANGE AFTER THE FACT

Zone 2 Zones were held April 7th in Canton, New York at Saint Lawrence's Elsa Gunnison Appleton Riding Hall. Those in attendance observed Centenary College capturing high point team honors at Zones for the first time since 2004 while Skidmore was a healthy second, finishing behind the Cyclones 48-43. Those in attendance also thought they observed an upset, in that Fairfield University appeared to finish third overall, ahead of Cazenovia by a 31-30 score for third place. With Zone 2 boasting over 1,000 hunter seat riders registered, the top three teams at this Zones show advanced to IHSA Nationals in West Springfield, Massachusetts May 3rd through 6th. It appeared that Fairfields' ability to place higher than third on two occasions early in the day had been the difference, making Cazenovia the odd team out.

However on Friday the 13th the official IHSA web site posted the 2007 IHSA Nationals team entries, and Cazenovia was in fact listed as one of the three Zone 2 teams. Apparently something with the paperwork regarding Fairfield monies owed to the IHSA was not in order on the day of Zone 2 Zones, resulting in several riders' points having to be forfeited. This however did not affect Fairfields' individual riders that day. Monica Cluffs' second in intermediate over fences and Elizabeth Jones' first in walk-trot were not nullified and both would compete in the National show nearly four weeks later.

Along with Caz's full team, six individual riders from Region 2 moved on to the Big E in Springfield, Massachusetts, including walk-trot rider Brittany Burns of the Wildcats. Caitlin Hartman of Alfred won the individual walk-trot-canter while Lindsey Weatherhead of the University of Ottawa placed second to Centenarys' Rachel Samuels in individual novice fences. Though we at Campus Equestrian cannot yet prove it, we see no signs that a Canadian school has ever advanced an IHSA rider to Nationals prior to Weatherhead's performance on this day. Saint Lawrence was already represented at IHSA Nationals as Brittan White is the Region 2 Cacchione rider. White (who was second in individual open flat to earn another ride at Nationals) will be joined by teammates Dorrie Douglas, who was second to Jessica Schroff of Skidmore in the day's first class, individual open fences, and Jessica Campbell, who won individual novice flat. As soon as Campbell enters the ring at the Big E she will make IHSA history as the first daughter of a prior Cacchione Cup winner to compete at IHSA Nationals. Campbell's mom Suzie was the Cacchione Cup Champion as a sophomore with Colby-Sawyer College in 1976.
