Walk-trot-canter rider Jamie Brabon won the final blue ribbon of the day for Virginia Intermont at the Holiday Tournament of Champions show in Laurinburg, North Carolina on December 3rd. Five other Virginia Intermont riders - from two separate teams - also won classes.

GOLD RUSH: VIRGINIA INTERMONT WINS THIRD CONSECUTIVE TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS SERIES EVENT

Laurinburg, NC - Erika Jewell. Nora Harris. Jessica May. Julianne Wilson. Cassie Ralston. Kristina Macey. Jamie Brabon. Remember these names.

Each of these individuals made up the Virginia Intermont College "Gold" team at the 2005 Holiday Tournament of Champions Collegiate Invitational on December 3rd. With 22 schools participating, and six of the 22 schools bringing a second team, the Tournament series show included a record 28 teams for the first time. And Virginia Intermont Gold trampled over all of them.

How one-sided was the competition? Though the first two classes of the day did not include an Intermont Gold rider, the Gold team went on to score 45 points out of a possible 56. One of two Mount Holoyke squads was Reserve with 26.

Jewell, Harris, May, Wilson, Ralston, Macey and Brabon. Remember them. Several of them have ridden at past IHSA Nationals shows. Others have ridden in prior Tournament of Champions events. One or two will no doubt make their Nationals debuts sometime in the future. Their placings for the Gold Team were superlative: Firsts for Jewell (open flat), Harris (intermediate flat), Wilson (novice flat), Macey (novice fences) and Brabon (walk-trot-canter) and Seconds for May (intermediate fences) and Ralston (walk-trot). Jewell, the only Intermont rider with two rides, had a tough draw over fences, resulting in a rare 'Pointless' effort from the senior who leads the difficult Zone 4, Region 3 open rider standings by nine points headed into the winter break. So far in 2005-06, Virginia Intermont has won five regular season shows and two Tournament of Champions competitions. Not since Hollins defeated Virginia Intermont at 2005 Zone 4 Zones has anyone finished ahead of all cobra teams present (Virginia Intermont was reserve that day, thus advancing to Nationals where they won the National Championship for a second consecutive season).

By the time Wilson (a sophomore from Ashville, North Carolina) won novice flat, the rest of the field could tell they had essentially been put away and that the race for Reserve would be an interesting contest for the remainder of the day. Several of the top ten finishers had actually started the day on a high note. Mount Holyoke senior Kyla Makhloghi won the first section of open flat while Delaware Valley College sophomore Kaitlyn McLaughlin won the first section of intermediate flat shortly thereafter. Delaware Valley would finish with 19 points, while Mount Holyoke team 'Bob' (including Makhloghi) would make the top five, with 24 points to their credit.

I'm honored: Schools with two teams taking part in the competition were instructed to come up with names to differentiate their squads. Centenary College came up with the best names, calling one team the Centenary 'Methodist Mounters' while the other became the 'Hackettstown Hackers' (Centenary College is located in Hackettstown, New Jersey). The University of Findlay named one squad 'The Conejos' and the other 'the Tortugas.' Host Saint Andrews fielded 'The Plaid Posters' and 'the Flying Scotsmen.' Penn State brought 'Basic Blue' and 'Plain White' to the show. And Mount Holyoke College decided to honor IHSA Founder and Executive Director Bob Cacchione by naming a team for him. But what to call the other Mount Holyoke team? Mount Holyoke opted to name both teams after people, and much to the surprise of this writer, the second Mount Holyoke contingent was 'Mount Holyoke Team Maxwell!" This writer actually felt pressure for HIS team to have a good performance.

Delaware Valley sophomore rider Lauren Vile (left, with aggies Head Coach Cory Kieschnick) was one of three aggies to put points on the board. Delaware Valley earned two firsts and a second at the Tournament, scoring 19 points. Vile won her section of walk-trot-canter.

Jewell won the second section of open flat while Harris won the second section of intermediate flat. Brittany Kekelis, a College of Charleston junior from Camden, South Carolina briefly had the cougars in third place via her first in open fences (Julia Nichols of Charleston had placed second to McLaughlin earlier). Genna Ruschmeyer put Fairfield on the board in a big way in the other section of open fences, as the senior from South Glastonbury, Connecticut won her open jumping class just as she had done almost a year ago to the day at the 2004 Holiday Tournament of Champions hosted by Centenary. Through six classes it was Virginia Intermont Gold 14, Mount Holyoke Maxwell (with seconds from Cassie Herman and Chrissy Hewitt) 13, College of Charleston 12, Mount Holyoke Bob 11 and Penn State Plain White (including a second for Samantha Pandolfi in open flat) 10.

Just as the Pre-Season Tournament turned into a 'Virginia Intermont versus Mount Holyoke' contest, the seventh class of the day left the impression history may repeat itself. Natasha Rabinowitz won intermediate over fences for Mount Holyoke Bob while Jessica May was reserve for VI Gold. Saint Andrews sophomore Jamie Nickolson was fourth for the Plaid Posters (a misprint on one page of the show program called them the 'Paid Posters'), raising that teams' total to 12 (Christina Kalinski, who is nine points behind Jewell in the Zone 4, Region 3 open rider standings, had earned the other nine plaid points through two open divisions). The Gold led the Bob by a 19-18 margin through seven classes.

The second section of intermediate fences would allow some the opportunity to gain ground, as the Gold, the Bob, the Plain White and the Plaid Posters were not entered in this section. Nichols brought Charleston two more points while Mount Holyoke's Kirsten Kasper added four to the Maxwell total, now at 17. Tiffany Neidhardt's third pushed Centenary's Methodist Mounters into double digits with 12. Travis Womer, who leads the Zone 6, Region 3 Stock Seat Open Rider Standings through four fall shows, put Findlays' Conejos on the board with a second. Lindsay Avocato, a Vanderbilt senior from Austin, Texas won the division, getting the commodores into double digits at ten points.

Up to this point the Intermont Black Team had only eight points (open rider Rachel Gilman had placed second to Makhloghi in the first class of the day). Jennifer Kelly, a VI freshman from Boca Raton, Florida would up that total to 15 in a hurry, winning the first section of walk-trot-canter (no mention is made in the program as to whether these classes included riders in both beginner and advanced walk-trot-canter or only the advanced competitors). Emily Messina of Centenary's Hackettstown Hackers was reserve while Sara Roysten briefly gave Team Bob the lead overall with her third in this division. Mount Holyoke Bob had 22, Virginia Intermont Gold 19 and Mount Holyoke Maxwell 17. One factor that started to mean something was the remaining number of rides for each team. VI gold and MHC Maxwell had four still to come. Roysten was Bob's fifth ride, leaving them with three.

In contrast to IHSA Regular-Season Shows, the ride-off was not between riders from the open, intermediate and novice divisions, but only from open and intermediate, which explains why the ride-off for Grand Champion took place before any of the novice divisions. The numbers worked out that each rider with a first made the ride-off (none of the eight participants could claim more than seven points; Jewell and Ruschmeyer were the only riders in the Grand Champion class with more than one ride). Ribbons from first through sixth were awarded in this class, with Harris sixth, Rabinowitz fifth, Avocato fourth, Kekelis third, Jewell reserve and Makhloghi the grand champion. This gave the senior from Putney, Vermont her second consecutive 'Grand Champion Championship,' having won a similar ride-off at the Pre-Season event on September 24th.

Wake Forest sophomore Sarah Gay Barnett won her section of novice flat. The Demon Deacons scored 16 of their 20 points over their final four rides.

The first section of novice flat put Virginia Intermont Gold into the lead for good. Wilson won the division, while Ashley Weichmann of the University of Wisconsin at Madison was reserve, earning five of the badger's 15 points in the process. The Gold team was up to 26 points with three divisions remaining.

Walk-trot section 'A' was next, with most of the Gold team's closest competitors not entered (these teams would turn up in sections B and C, as the walk-trot and walk-trot-canter levels were held over three sections in order to give the riders more room to maneuver). Brielle Juhan, a Berry College sophomore from Cartersville, Georgia won the division, moving the Vikings into double digits with 11. However Virginia Intermont junior Cassie Ralston was reserve, raising the Gold total to 31. This VI team was now nine ahead of MHC Bob with each looking forward to two more rides.

Five schools from Zone 4, Region 3 accounted for seven of the 28 teams entered, and the host region would earn the top three placings in the first section of novice fences. Katie Ackerman of host Saint Andrews was third in this division, giving the 'Flying Scotsmen' team their only points of the day. McKenzie Roberts of North Carolina State was reserve, scoring the final five points of the day for the Wolfpack (Open rider Lauren Hill had accounted for five of the NC State points in two open divisions while Rebecca Pritchett had placed fourth in walk-trot-canter section A). Macey, a junior from Laurel, Maryland won the seventh of eight divisions for the Gold team, raising their total to 38 and mathematically clinching no worse than a tie for High Point Team. The only team with a shot to tie was the Mount Holyoke Maxwell team, stuck for a long time at 17 but with three rides still to come.

The second section of walk-trot-canter gave Delaware Valley their second blue ribbon of the day. Lauren Vile, a sophomore from Newtown, Pennsylvania who had scored both english and western points for the aggies at 2005 IHSA Nationals won the class while Zoe Steele-Rand of the Findlay Tortugas was reserve. Strangely enough the Tortugas team was done for the day with 15 points while the Conejos still had four rides ahead of them! Hallie Bernstein of Penn State's Plain White team was third, ending that group of Nittany Lions' day with 17 points. Whitney Rockwell gave team Maxwell their 18th point with a sixth, which meant that Intermont Gold had secured first place at a third consecutive Tournament of Champions event.

The state of Connecticut did well in the second and final section of novice flat. Cathy Lefebvre raised the University of Connecticut point total to nine with a third (Karen Cooper had earned a yellow ribbon in the first intermediate fences class while open rider Meghann Jones was sixth in open flat) while Fairfield freshman Stephanie Simpson was reserve, giving the stags 13 points up to this moment. Winning the division was Sarah Gay Barnett of Wake Forest. A sophomore from Lexington, Kentucky, Barnett increased the Demon Deacon point total to 13, making the race for reserve even more interesting.

Mount Holyoke Head Coach C.J. Law poses with walk-trot rider Kelly Reardon (left), who was the only rider on 'Team Maxwell' to win a class. However two riders on Mount Holyoke 'Team Bob' took the top spot.

With only four classes remaning only two teams had broken the 20-point barrier. The second of three sections of walk-trot changed that as Kelly Reardon of Mount Holyoke Team Maxwell won outright. The junior from Waltham, Massachusetts raised her team's total to 26, three more than Mount Holyoke Bob, which remained the only other team over 20 points up to this moment. Claudia Good of Delaware Valley was reserve, which gave the aggies 19 points and temporarily fourth place. Pam Ciccone of Centenary's Methodist Mounters was third, giving that particular team of Cyclones 17 points without anyone having placed higher than third up to this point. Christopher Fritzen of Penn State Basic Blue was fourth while Johnna Applegate of Virginia Intermont Black was fifth, giving the other VI team 17 points. Liz Jones of Fairfield rounded out the placings in this division with a sixth.

49ers make history: 21 of the 22 schools to bring teams to the invitational joined the IHSA sometime between the organization's inception and the mid-1990's. However the University of North Carolina at Charlotte made history when it became the first team ever to take part in a Tournament of Champions show in their first season of existence. The 49ers, who were only observers at the first Zone 4, Region 3 show of the season, could claim their fifth-ever IHSA show was a successful one. Sarah Wooley, a junior from Winston-Salem, North Carolina won the second novice fences class, raising the 49er team total to ten points, which would put them ahead of eight teams for the day (including squads from legendary programs at Centenary and Saint Andrews). Wooley did not even know Charlotte was starting a team when the school year began ("I caught wind of it and jumped right in" she said). Kristin Kornberg of Wisconsin at Madison was reserve while Lena Ohta of Penn State Basic Blue was third, inching that group of Nittany Lions closer to their plain white counterparts. Kate McAlinn's fourth moved the Plaid Posters to 18 points and temporary possession of fifth place while Lauren Blankenship scored the final two points for Intermont's Black Team with a fifth. Heather Caswell of UConn was sixth to round out the class which marked the end of all undergraduate divisions above the walk-trot-canter level.

The rich get richer: Jamie Brabon, the final Virginia Intermont undergraduate rider of the day, did what many of her Team Gold teammates did earlier - She won! A humorous moment came when the announcer stated that Brabon, a walk-trot-canter rider from Williamsburg, Virginia, was in first place for 'Internet Gold!' The cobras' better team ended up with 45 points, four fewer than at the Pre-Season Tournament on September 24th but given that Virginia Intermont had a second team with 19 points at today's show this was only a trivial drop-off in scoring. Amy Carter of Centenary took the reserve ribbon, which raised the Methodist Mounters' team total to 22 and fourth place overall at the time. Lauren Klutchka of Penn State came close to making the battle of Nittany Lions squads even, as her third gave basic blue 15 overall. Incredibly, only four teams were at or over 20 points with only one undergraduate class to go. VI Gold had 45 (done), Mount Holyoke Maxwell 26 (done), Mount Holyoke Bob 23 (one more rider), Centenary Methodist Mounters 22 (done), VI Black 19 (done), Delaware Valley 19 (done) and Saint Andrews Plaid Posters 18 (one more rider). Charleston, Wake Forest and Wisconsin at Madison had riders in the last class and a shot at 20 or more points, leaving the top six teams still somewhat up in the air.

North Carolina - Charlotte became the first team in IHSA history to appear in a Tournament of Champions hunter seat show in their first season competing within the IHSA.

James wins in large Alumni field: Fourteen alumni competed in a combined alumni division, including four graduates from the host school. Now employed by Saint Andrews within their riding program, 2002 graduate Jennifer James, the former open rider who was the last Zone 4, Region 3 Cacchione Cup competitor at Nationals before Jewell started her streak finished ahead of three other former Knights and ten others for the blue ribbon. Shay Meisinger and Jen Corti, both 2004 University of Connecticut alums, placed second and third, respectively. Current Vanderbilt Head Coach Mawghan McCabe was fourth, while 2005 Centenary graduate Amy Gregonis (who coached the Cylclones at the USMA show on November 20th) was fifth. Drew University assistant Coach Sandy Sayre, whose four blue ribbons in alumni divisions at IHSA Nationals shows is still the all-time record, was sixth. James was the only rider in the top six who is not currently active as an alumni rider in IHSA shows (Zone 4, Region 3 is one of a small number of Regions that currently does not offer alumni, hindering James' chances of riding in the division during the regular season).

The third section of walk-trot was finished just as the sun was setting. Nine riders took part, and two moved their teams into the top six. Aleece Mihok, a Wake Forest junior from Hillsborough, North Carolina won the division, giving the Demon Deacons 20 points and sixth place overall after tiebreakers. Megan Murray of the University of Connecticut earned the highest ribbon of the day for the huskies, placing second to give UConn a healthy 16 points. Gabby Sloan earned the Conejos four more points, still not enough to catch the Tortugas (with 15) but still one of the better Findlay ribbons of the day. Jessica Wooten of College of Charleston was fourth, raising the Cougars' total to 17. Emily Thigpen of Saint Andrews added two more points to the Plaid Posters' total, making their score an even 20, and Katherine Malone of Mount Holyoke Team Bob was sixth, giving the Lyons a combined 50 points between two teams but leaving Bob two points out of reserve with 24.

The top six teams announced were Wake Forest in sixth place, Saint Andrews Plaid Posters in fifth (with 20 points, like Wake), Centenary College Methodist Mounters in fourth (seven of eight riders earned points while the team finished with 22 points), Mount Holyoke Team Bob (with 24 points) in third, Mount Holyoke Team Maxwell (with 26 points) Reserve and Virginia Intermont Gold High Point (with 45 points). Virginia Intermont Head Coach Eddie Federwisch hinted that there were quite a few cobra riders the world at large has not seen at these Tournament shows that may appear come Zones and Nationals. Virginia Intermont will have one more Tournament appearance before next season, as for the first time in several seasons a Spring Tournament show will take place. The third Tournament show of 2005-06 will take place on Saturday, March 4th, hosted by Cal Poly - Pomona. Will Virginia Intermont make it four in a row? The odds look very good that those who participate in Pomona, California on March 4th will be shooting for second place, at least those who don't attend classes in Bristol, Virginia that is!
