WILLEMAN, WOMER, WEBER AND OTHERS COME UP BIG AT IHSA NATIONALS

It is unclear if 2006 IHSA Nationals will be remembered for a few comebacks, a spectacular facility, or perhaps a changing of the guard. Members of the Mount Holyoke Hunter Seat Team and the Ohio State Western Team won't soon forget, as each left the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg as part of a National Champion Team.

Down 17-8 to Penn State halfway through the hunter seat team competition, Mount Holyoke scored at least three points in each of the final four classes to take the championship by the narrowest of margins, 23-22 over both Penn State and Stanford.

Ohio State led the Western competition early, earning 12 points in the first two classes. Through two days of competition, Ohio State had 22 points and a ten point lead. Then Kansas State won the fifth of six western team classes giving the audience their money's worth and closing the gap to 22-19. The final western team class went to perenial powerhouse Texas A & M, which moved the aggies into third place with 16 points. Neither Ohio State nor Kansas State scored, meaning the AQHA Trophy will head to Columbus for the eighth time since 1991 nevertheless.

Stanford senior Sarah Willeman put on one of the most dominating displays of any IHSA hunter seat rider showing at Nationals this decade. Willeman won both individual open classes, team open equitation on the flat and the 2006 Cacchione Cup, scoring 92 in the flat phase, 87 in the jumping phase and 94 in the work-off. Willeman accounted for eleven of Stanfords' 22 points, helping the Cardinal establish a new record for points by a West Coast English Team at an IHSA National Show.

University of Findlay junior Travis Womer became the second Oiler rider in as many seasons to win the individual AQHA Trophy. Womer had the top score in both the Rening and Rail Phases, earning a score of 146.5 in the former (This converts to a pair of '120's by rule). Womer follows former teammate and current Findlay Assistant Coach Jake Bowman as the 2006 IHSA Champion western open rider.

Other noteworthy performances were turned in by Jamie Abel of Morrisville State College, who won the prestigious NRHA-sponsored individual open reining class while also finishing third in team open rail and eighth in the individual AQHA Trophy class; Ohio State alumni rider Barbara Stancel, who won the alumni reining division while placing third in alumni rail; Drew University graduate Sandra Sayre, who captured her fifth alumni blue ribbon at an IHSA National Show since 1998, via a first in alumni flat; and Jodie Weber of Sweet Briar College, who placed fourth in the Cacchione Cup Competition, second in team open flat and was the champion in team open fences. Weber earned 12 of the Vixen's 18 team points in what was Sweet Briars' first-ever appearance in an actual team competition at IHSA Nationals.
