Seen here at 2005 IHSA Nationals is...hmmm...we are not sure! With all the running around to get pictures, we forgot to write down who this was. She competed in one of the early classes on the first day of 2005 Nationals. Any help in identifying her would be appreciated.

2006 IHSA NATIONALS: THE TRANSITION FROM ENGLISH TO WESTERN OVER FOUR DAYS

For the third season in a row, the IHSA National Horse Show will take place over the course of four days, with English riding exclusively on day one, Western riding exclusively on day four, and a combination of the two disciplines on days two and three.

Held in the Equine Arena at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania from Thursday, May 4th through Sunday, May 7th, dozens of schools are represented individually, while 18 Full English and 17 Full Western Teams have qualified. A complete list of all the 2006 IHSA Nationals classes in the order they have been scheduled appears at the conclusion of this story.

Though no more than 12 classes take place on any one day of Nationals, the classes take longer than at Regionals, Zones or Regular Season IHSA Shows. This is in part due to the larger size of the classes (18 riders in the ring for the majority of english classes, at least 14 for all undergraduate western), the increased likelyhood of testing (this is the National Championship after all) and a longer presentation of ribbons to acknowledge each rider who placed. Therefore it is important for riders and spectators alike to remember that a full day at IHSA Nationals may take considerably longer than the average IHSA regular season show.

Day one will begin with four over fences divisions, including team novice fences. After the arena is cleared, the remainder of the day is made up of english flat classes, including two separate heats of 15 riders for the first phase of the Cacchione Cup Competition. Four of the eight english team classes will be completed on this day. Day one was over and done very quickly last season, with Heather Hurst of Hollins jumping in the ring at 8:50AM to start and Lindsay Little also of Hollins pinning first in team walk-trot-canter at 4:19PM to finish. 12 classes in only seven and a half hours was a remarkable feat. It remains to be seen how long opening day will take in 2006; perhaps the amount of testing in each class will play a part.

Day two is also made up of 12 classes, but in this case five of them are western. The first four classes are english (including the over fences phase of the Cacchione Cup). Then at some point towards the end of the traditional lunch hour, the AQHA High Point Open Rider Rail Phase kicks off the first of 16 western classes at 2006 Nationals. English and Western alternate for most of the afternoon, until Alumni Reining follows Team Advanced Western to end the day two proceedings (Three of the four alumni classes take place on day two). With the many western patterns and 29 riders jumping a Cacchione course, day two took just over eleven hours to complete in 2005 (8:37AM to 7:45PM). By contrast, day two at 2004 Nationals, the first IHSA show to run for four days, took over 13 and a half hours to complete with a slightly different schedule.

Day three is usually the longest day of IHSA Nationals. Four english classes start the day, including the Team Open Fences and the Cacchione Work-Off phase. If you love a parade, then be in the Equine Arena by 11AM, as the traditional IHSA Parade of Teams will take place between the second and third classes of the day. Following the parade, the awards and ribbons will be handed out to the many english teams who placed inside the top ten. Sometimes during Nationals some sort of demonstration is part of the schedule. Following in the footsteps of such demonstrations as Dressage (1998) and Vaulting (2000), there will be a Polocrosse demonstration during this break. Following two individual english classes that follow, the remainder of the entire show is western, with team open reining representing the halfway point of the western team competition. The final class on Saturday is the AQHA High Point Open Rider Reining Phase. This class often features the finest reining work of the entire show. Following the division, the ribbons and the AQHA individual open rider Trophy are given out. Day three at 2005 Nationals took 12 and half hours to complete. It should be noted that the AQHA Open Rider Reining Phase took three and half hours alone, due to a break to drag the ring in the middle of 20-plus rides. Fans attending the Friday and Saturday sessions should plan to eat dinner at the Farm Show Complex if they have an interest in the late-day divisions.

The final day of IHSA Nationals is usually the fastest (The 2005 Sunday session started at 8:23AM and ended at 2:30PM). Six western classes make up the schedule, including the final two team classes. The National Reining Horse Association-sponsored individual open reining class is the third division of the day. Following the final class, which is once again the team open rail horsemanship, the ribbons and awards are presented to the top ten western teams and the 2005-06 IHSA Season comes to an end.
