Jerry Steinmetz hopes open rider Krista Steinmetz (who is also his daughter) and the rest of
his boilermaker equestrians have big days at Black Dog Enterprises this Saturday and Sunday.
STILL A FEW IHSA SHOWS LEFT IN CALENDAR YEAR
Though the Holiday Tournament of Champions contains schools from 23 colleges, 18 regions and
8 zones, their are still some schools competing in normal, regular season IHSA shows in
other locales this weekend.
Purdue, the high point hunter seat team for the year in whatever region they have been a
part of since the 1991-92 season, find themselves trailing St. Mary of the Woods for the
lead in english points headed into a pair of shows hosted by Taylor University this weekend.
The Zone 9, Region 1 hunter seat battle is far from over, as five shows will take place in
early 2005.
Oklahoma State hopes to catch Texas A & M at a pair of stock seat shows. The cowgirls,
who were high point stock seat team in Zone 7, Region 2 last season, host this weekend.
While Oklahoma State hopes to make up the 17-point deficit, Stephen F. Austin and West Texas
A & M look to lasso the cowgirls, who lead SFA by a point and the buffs by three points so
far in 2004-05.
Though they have been out of action for over a month, Stock Seat riders in Zone 4,
Region 1 gather again at Clay Hill Stables for a pair of shows on Sunday. American
University will host the opener while Johns Hopkins will host the second show. The
University of Maryland has EASILY won this region every season since Western was introduced
four years ago, though St. Mary's College of Maryland is making strides, trailing the
equiterps by only 16 headed into these shows.
Southern California is the site for western on Saturday and english on Sunday. Shows
have been postponed in Zone 8, Region 2 due to weather issues on more than one occasion so
far this season. If all goes well, San Diego will try to chip away at the Cal Poly - Pomona
lead on Saturday while everyone will stay in the race on Sunday. Twelve points separate
first from sixth in the Region 2 hunter seat team standings, though Sunday's show will be
only the second for english riders in 2004-05.
Perhaps the most interesting show of the weekend will be at Paterson Stables in
Penfield, New York. Though we at Campus Equestrian do not have solid information, there is
a rumor that Syracuse was leading Zone 2, Region 2 through the first two shows hosted by
Alfred. If the orange are still ahead, it would mark the first time a team other than
Cazenovia or Saint Lawrence led the region after more than one show. Keep in mind that
Cazenovia hosted a show on November 20th, the results of which we do not know and that Saint
Lawrence will host the next-to-last IHSA hunter seat show of the calendar year next Saturday
(The University of San Diego will host a day later, closing the book on IHSA shows until
mid-January).
Information on the Tournament of Champions can be found elsewhere on this site. We at
Campus Equestrian would be remiss if we did not mention that three current and former IHSA
riders will also be in action this weekend. However John Pigott of the University of
Vermont, Jessica Long of Boston University and Amy Lowrey of the University of Massachusetts
at Amherst will be many hours ahead of us, riding in the World University Equestrian
Championships in Tokyo, Japan. In the most recent preliminary show in Hamburg, Germany,
the USA team of Pigott, Long and Lowrey placed fourth out of sixteen teams.
All in all, a pretty busy weekend for the IHSA considering the turkey was finished over
a week ago.
