debut on March 6th they already have a better web page than several teams that advanced
to 2004 IHSA Nationals.
CANISIUS PROVES EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A WEB SITE
What do Bard College, Drake University, St. Joseph's College of Indiana, College of
Wooster, Rocky Mountain College, University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Santa Clara
University, Villanova University and Canisius College all have in common?
The answer is these are some of the teams which made their IHSA debuts in 2004-05.
Some debuted with small rosters, others with nearly a full point card. And at least
one had an official web site.
About half of all 2004-05 IHSA Equestrian Teams have some sort of web site. Some give
detailed information about Riders and Coaches, some give results and some are
simply for announcements, such as when the next team meeting will be.
The Canisius College Equestrian Team web site (http://www2.canisius.edu/~ihsa/) is
only one page, with a link to the official IHSA site and a link to a photo from the March
6th Cazenovia College show. So why is this our Web Site of the Week?
Because Canisius is a brand new team with only one IHSA appearance ever! Formed as a
club in Fall of 2003 by advanced walk-trot-canter rider Amanda Meyer, the Canisius team
is currently made up of 20 active members, nine of which made their IHSA debuts at the
final Zone 2, Region 2 Regular Season Hunter Seat Show of the season. Though Canisius
had never appeared at an IHSA show prior to March 6th, griffs Head Coach
Elizabeth "Libby" McNabb rode in the IHSA for Indiana of Pennsylvania in the middle
1990's while Assistant Coach Michael Radich rode for S.U.N.Y. - Morrisville earlier this
decade. The show was a success, with Meyer placing second and novice rider Alyssa
Pollinger earning the griff's first blue ribbon in her fences round. Canisius scored
14 points, which was more than two other schools with previous IHSA appearances.
The Canisius home page starts with three paragraphs detailing how the team started,
where the team takes lessons (the "Prestigious Buffalo Equestrian Center," or BEC),
who the club officers are and how to get involved. This intro is followed by a series
of photos (Team President Meyer, Vice President Laura Szkutak, Treasurer Dana Cusano,
McNabb and Radich are pictured), with information about rider, horse and coach where
applicable.
There is also a link to a group photo from the March 6th Cazenovia Show, with most
of the riders who earned ribbons posing with them. The page concludes with
e-mail addresses for Meyer and Philosophy Professor Dr. John Zeis, the Canisius Team
Advisor, who was on hand for their March 6th debut and also takes an active role with
both the team and website.
Considering they have only one IHSA show to their credit, their site covers
all the basics any new IHSA team would need to cover. They tell you where they ride, who
is in charge, and how to get involved. There are many schools with IHSA programs that
don't tell you this much, or which don't have any web site at all. If your school
falls into the latter category, then take a look at the Canisius site and get started.
