THE 2005 IHSA NATIONAL ALUMNI DIVISIONS
Sunbury, OH - As has been the case every year since 1998, four Alumni classes have taken
place at IHSA Nationals, and as has been the case only half the time in that same span there
were four separate alumni champions.
Before discussing the results of the alumni divisions, we present our 2005
Zone-By-Zone Recap of the alumni results leading up to IHSA Nationals.
Zone 1: Region 1 was dominated by University of Connecticut alumni, with Shay Meisinger,
Lora Abbott and Allison Wooten all qualified for Regionals in both hunter seat alumni
divisions. UConn alumni Liz Lopez was also qualified on the flat, while Jen Corti qualified
over fences. Meisinger and Corti made Zone 1 Zones over fences, while Abbott and Dana Stark,
the lone Region 1 Alumni rider not from UConn (but from UMass at Amherst) reached Zones on
the flat. Anne Meade of Mount Holyoke was the only alumni rider in Region 3 who had enough
points on the flat to qualify, and points were lowered below the normal 28 to allow Meade to
compete at Zones over fences. Tufts graduate Katie Schaaf, who has made Nationals several
times as a graduate as well as in 1998 as an undergrad, led the Region 4 alumni in both
hunter seat divisions. Sandra Walsh of Worcester State was second in the same. Schaaf and
Walsh each rode twice at Zones on April 9th, with Walsh fifth both times and Schaaf reserve.
Joining Schaaf at Nationals was Meisinger over fences and Abbott on the flat, both Zone
Alumni division champions. Region 2 had no alumni classes whatsoever, while Zone 1 has
never held stock seat classes of any kind, alumni or otherwise.
Zone 2: In total contrast to Zone 1, all three regions of Zone 2 have stock seat, and in
2004-05 all three held alumni classes. However no one in Region 1 reached the 28 point level
in either western division and in this case the points were apparently not lowered. In
Region 2 both Katie Fistner of Cazenovia College and Alicia Fereday of the State University
of New York at Oswego qualified for Regionals in both western divisions. The battle of the
Boomhower sisters in Region 3 was won by Lynn Boomhower. However neither Lynn nor sister
Marie had enough points to qualify in alumni reining. Lynn had 28 on the rail, and went to
Zones. However Fistner and Fereday earned the top two placings and went on to Nationals.
Zone 2 hunter seat alumni came out en masse in 2004-05. For a rare change New York
University graduate (and also NYU Head Coach) Dominique Vonsiatsky was the leading alumni
rider on the flat and over fences in Region 1, with Drew Assistant Coach and alumni riding
legend Sandra Sayre second. Tara Gerber of Sacred Heart qualified on the flat for a second
season in a row while 2004 UConn graduate Stefanie Kealey was the third fences qualifier.
Region 2 had five riders in total go to Regionals. 2004 Cazenovia graduate Kelly Nyhan led
the region in alumni flat while Kathy Feasel of Nazareth College led the fences division.
Both riders qualified in the other hunter seat alumni division as did 2004 Rochester
Institute of Technology graduate Joanna Prescott in alumni flat. Cornell alumni rider
Christie Schneckner, for several seasons the most frequent alumni competitor in Zone 2,
Region 3, had at least five competitors this season, including former Stonehill College
Cacchione Cup rider Emily Unger and 2004 Hamilton College graduate Carrie Biggar. Both
Biggar and Unger qualified for Regionals on the flat and fences. Schneckner was four points
short of Regionals on the flat, but she led Region 3 in fences points with 33. When Zones
arrived on April 9th Vonsiatsky was a no-show. Everyone else who had qualified for
Regionals also competed at Zones as the top three rather than the top two still advance from
Regionals to Zones in Zone 2. For the first time since 1999 Sayre did not advance to
Nationals, as Unger and Biggar held down the top two placings in each hunter seat alumni
division. Biggar won over fences while Unger won on the flat. This also marked the first
time that we can determine when no alumni rider from Region 1 made Nationals since the
divisions were introduced in the 1970's. Keep in mind that until 1996, the criteria for
alumni reaching Nationals was different, as in those days the top alumni rider in each
region (combined flat and fences points) automatically went to Nationals as the sole alumni
representative from their particular region.
Zone 3: As a whole Zone 3 had the most hunter seat riders sign up to compete of any Zone
in the country this season. Region 1 had the largest number within the Zone, with at least
13 riders competing at least once. Yale Head Coach and 2002 graduate Margot Sanger-Katz was
the only Region 1 rider to qualify for Regionals in both divisions. Hofstra graduate Mindy
DeLeary led the Region in flat points with 34, followed by Fairfield alum Valerie Ackhanian
with 33. DeLeary and Ackhanian joined Sanger-Katz at Regionals as did Stony Brook's Erin
Graham, who was second to Sanger-Katz over fences. With only the top two going on to Zones
in Zone 3, Ackhanian was the odd rider out at Regionals. Region 2 hunter seat was led by
Virginia Tech alumni rider Blair Barbieri, who was top point-winner on the flat and over
fences with 41 and 39 respectively. Delaware Valley graduates Dawn Kaufman and Joanne
Coniglio also qualified on the flat while Buck County's Amber Jewell (cousin of Virginia
Intermont open rider Erika Jewell) and Delaware Valley's Jamie Mast were in on the alumni
fences. Regionals eliminated Kaufman on the flat and Jewell over fences. Region 3 only
produced two riders with 28 or more points, and both Jaclyn Page of California of
Pennsylvania and Laura Hetz of Edinboro College thus advanced automatically to Zones.
Region 4 was led as usual by Virginia Intermont graduate Ashton Phillips, who scored
exactly 53 points in both the alumni flat and fences divisions. UConn graduate Chrissy
Seelaus also qualified in both hunter seat alumni divisions while Findlay graduate Erika
Bender joined them on the flat while East Stroudsburg graduate Meredith Reinhart qualified
over fences. Had Reinhart not qualified, this would have been the only time this decade
that none of the hunter seat alumni qualified for Regionals in a given region could claim
to have graduated from one of the schools in that particular region!
Region 1 does not have western divisions of any kind. The other three regions in Zone 3
hold stock seat shows. However Regions 3 and 4 are combined for stock seat competitions,
as Region 3 would not have enough western riders to show on their own. Region 2 had a
large alumni turnout, as Coniglio, Kaufman, Jewell and Delaware Valley alum Courtney
Beidelman all qualified for Regionals in alumni reining while Coniglio, Kaufman and 1985
Cazenovia graduate and long-time University of Delaware Head Coach Bryan Bradley qualified
on the rail. Page led both stock seat alumni divisions in Region 4 while a pair of Rutgers
graduates, Sara Silkotch and Celeste Sisto, also qualified in each.
Zone 3 Stock Seat Zones did not include Sisto, who did not ride at Regionals as she had
already accepted employment in Alaska. Though Beidelman was fourth in Region 2 alumni rail
points she advanced to Nationals along with Silkotch in the division. Silkotch and Page
made it through Zones to Nationals in the reining division. Zone 3 Hunter Seat Zones were
held April 9th, a week after the western competition. Barbieri finished first over fences
while Sanger-Katz made it to Nationals for the first time by winning the alumni flat.
Phillips was reserve in both english alumni classes.
 |
Left to Right: Shay Meisinger (formerly of the University of Connecticut), Trisha
Prettyman (formerly of the University of Maryland) and Emily Unger (formerly of Stonehill
College) placed 3-2-1 in Alumni Fences. Unger's only previous National alumni appearance
saw her out of the ribbons in alumni flat three seasons ago. 2005 was much better for the
aspiring medical student. |
Zone 4: Though there was a time in the early 1980's when stock seat did take place in
Region 2 of Zone 4 the only Region within the Zone currently to hold stock seat classes is
Region 1. Coincidentally Region 1 is also the only place to find alumni classes within the
Zone. With several Region 1 hunter seat shows usually held without alumni classes being
offered, it is rare that an english alumni class even takes place at Zone 4, Region 1 Regionals, as
no more than two riders usually qualify. These lucky few who reach 28 points are often
among the first riders nationwide to clinch a trip to Nationals, as no post-season
elimination is needed until early May. In 2004-05 only University of Maryland Assistant
Coach Trisha Prettyman earned enough points in each division to qualify for Regionals, and
thus earned a direct pass to Nationals. Prettyman and Ceder Crest graduate Gabrielle
Boulerice qualified in both western divisions, with Prettyman tops in Reining points while
Boulerice led the rail division. Saint Mary's of Maryland Head Coach and Mary Washington
graduate Jackie Falkowski-Schmitter reached 30 points in the rail division but apparently
was third at Regionals, as Boulerice and Prettyman went on to compete at Nationals in each
alumni western division.
Zone 5: Alumni riders turned out in large numbers within Zone 5 during 2004-05, perhaps
giving the Zone more alumni than any Zone save for Zone 3. Region 1 included several riders
who showed both english and western, with University of Kentucky alumni Laura Harbour able
to qualify in both hunter seat alumni divisions and western rail. Former Vanderbilt
University Cacchione rider Mawghan McCabe was tops in both Region 1 english alumni divisions,
scoring 48 on the flat and 53 over fences. Midway College graduate Marianne England also
qualified in both english divisions, while University of Tennessee at Knoxville alum Amanda
Wickham tallied 30 points and a trip to Regionals in alumni flat. Middle Tennessee State
alumni dominated the Region 1 stock seat (not all that unlike what UConn did for hunter seat
in Zone 1, Region 1). Allison Brannon was first in the region with 34 alumni rail points,
while the former MTSU nationals competitor was second to Murray State alum Krista Stewart in
Reining. Middle Tennessee graduates Jessica Schultz and Corrine Gould also qualified, with
the former going to Regionals in both alumni western divisions and the latter in rail only.
Anderson College graduate Heidi Ray had as good a season as any Region 2 alumni, advancing
to Regionals in three of four alumni divisions. Though caught a point short of advancing in
alumni reining, Ray led Region 2 in alumni fences points with 43. University of Findlay
graduate Jennifer Cruise also qualified in three alumni divisions, though she was not in the
top five in the Region 2 alumni fences standings. Two Heathers, one being Greer formerly of
Erskine College and the other being Lindell formerly of the University of Georgia, rode
hunter seat only and qualified in both divisions. 2004 AQHA Cup rider Katie Leonard of Berry
College scored 33 points in reining and 31 on the rail to lead Region 2 in both alumni
western divisions.
University of Florida graduate Jennifer Smith had the honor of being the only rider in
Zone 5 to qualify in all four alumni divisions. Smith led the Region 3 alumni fences with
34 and was the only rider within the region to don both britches and chaps in 2004-05. The
Region 3 stock seat field was made up entirely of ex-gators, with Jennifer Foster placing
first with 35 points in both alumni western divisions. Second was Emily Wilbanks with 32
reining and 31 rail points. Smith nearly scored 30 in all four divisions, but only earned
29 reining points. Elise Sproul, the oldest of the legendary Sproul sisters at College of
Charleston, led the flat field with 37 points while former Georgia State rider Callie
Mizell was second with 33. Smith's 34 points were not only tops in alumni fences, they were
the only point total worthy of Regionals. Sproul just missed out on alumni fences, second
in a crowded field with 27. Smith automatically earned a pass straight to Zones in this
division.
Unfortunatly we at Campus Equestrian do not have the Regionals placings for
Zone 5 post-season shows. We do know that McCabe won alumni fences and that Smith was
reserve in the division at Zone 5 Zones, and that McCabe was second to Sproul in alumni
flat. Schultz and Brannon held down the top two spots in alumni western horsemanship on
April 9th, while Foster and Smith did likewise in alumni reining. The Florida sweep in
the latter class gave the gators three western alumni reiners at Nationals, as Holly Saigo
survived Zone 6 Zones to compete against her former teammates.

Lacy Sproul (right) stand on each side of their Mother following Elise's first in alumni
flat. Another Sproul sibling, Karen, also rode for Charleston. Freshman Lacy has three
more seasons riding for the cougars ahead of her.
|
Zone 6: Region 3 had alumni at only one hunter seat show and no stock seat shows. For
the second year in a row Region 2 had no alumni. Not unlike in Zone 4 it was Region 1 with
a healthy turnout, with six hunter seat and three stock riders making multiple appearances.
Only one rider was common to both disciplines. Former University of Cincinnati bearcat
rider Amy Diehl showed just for the fun of it and qualifed for Regionals in both stock seat
divisions. Diehl found the hunter seat field more difficult, with at least four riders
showing against her with IHSA Nationals experience (either as an undergrad or an alumni).
Allison Park, who was Allison Shaw while an undergraduate at Hiram College, led the alumni
flat with 45 points while Ohio University graduate Lani Blackford led Region 1 in fences
points with 42. University of Akron graduate Tiffany Bragg and Oberlin College alum Allison
Matthews both qualified over fences, while former Miami of Ohio Cacchione rider Erin Barritt
(Erin Armbruster when last seen at Nationals) rode only on the flat and finished with
exactly 28 points needed to qualify. University of Florida graduate Holly Saigo led both
stock seat divisions, while Ohio State graduate Tyline Nearon also qualified in both
divisions. Though we do not know if everyone participated at Regionals, we do know that
Park went on to ride at Nationals in alumni flat, Bragg in alumni fences, and Blackford in
both alumni divisions. Saigo edged out Diehl in both western classes at Zones, but with
only two entries, this writer assumed both would then be competing at Nationals. However
the official IHSA site, IHSAinc.com did not list Diehl as an upcomming Nationals entry, nor
was she listed in the official program at the National show. Saigo thus was the lone
Nationals stock seat competitor from Zone 6.
Zone 7: Region 1 had alumni hunter seat classes in 2004-05. Region 2 did not. Neither
had any alumni western classes. Though University of Colorado graduate Laura Shaner had 40
points in alumni flat (which would have made her the only alumni rider in the zone with 28
or more points in any alumni division) she did not participate at IHSA Nationals. As a
result, Zone 7 was the only zone with absolutely no alumni representation at 2005 Nationals.
Zone 8: Region 2 had hunter seat alumni but no stock seat. Region 3 had stock seat but
no hunter seat. Region 4 had no alumni whatsoever and Region 1 had a large turnout for both
alumni disciplines. Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo graduate Michael Kovatch reached Regionals
in each of the alumni divisions he competed in, which meant everything except alumni fences.
Former SLO teammate Lauren Schaefer had the distinction of being the only Region 1 alumni
over fences rider to qualify for Regionals, though this was only after the points were
lowered. Schaefer qualified on the flat as well, as did California at Davis graduate Jody
Imel. Kovatch had company at Stock Seat Regionals in the form of Fresno State alums Laine
Hendricks and Tiffany Washington. Hendricks led the Region 1 stock seat divisions with 38
on the rail and 37 reining. Washington finished second in both categories.
Former University of Maryland and University of San Diego rider Mika Buffington was the
lone Region 2 rider to qualify for Regionals, this after the points were lowered allowing
her into the post-season in alumni fences only. Region 3 had a large turnout for Stock
Seat, with each of the top five in alumni rail earning at least 29 points! On top was Utah
State graduate Anne Marie McAsey (who was Anne Marie Wanagel as an undergrad) with 41
points, followed by Southern Idahos' Nikki Ward with 38, Kamie Nuthak with 31, University of
Montana - Westerns' Josh Mani with 30 and a third Southern Idaho alum in Charles Hudson with
29. Ward led the Region 3 alumni reining with 31 followed by Hudson with 29 and Nuthak with
28. Quite surprisingly, all of the Region 3 Regional survivers were eliminated at Zones by
the Region 1 stock seat entries, with Hendricks and Washington going to Nationals on the
rail and Hendricks and Kovatch advancing to Sunbury in reining. Schaefer and Kovatch
survived Region 1 Regionals in alumni flat, thus assuring themselves a direct pass to
Nationals while Buffington and Schaefer clinched their trips to Ohio without ever having to
jump a fence in the post-season.
 |
We do not know the horse's name, but he certainly made Rutgers graduate
Sara Silkotch a happy camper. Silkotch won the alumni western horsemanship division, the
first time any Zone 3 rider has ever won a stock seat class at IHSA Nationals. |
Zone 9: In 2003-04 neither Regions 1 nor 3 had any alumni. Save for the absence of
stock seat in Region 1, alumni was alive and well throughout Zone 9 in 2004-05. Purdue
graduate Lauren Sappenfield topped both hunter seat divisions in Region 1, scoring 42 points
in alumni flat and one point less over fences. Two other Purdue alumni qualified, with
Morgan Fawkes getting to Regionals in alumni flat and Ryan Reis doing likewise in alumni
fences. IUPUI graduate Angie Yates was third in both divisions for the year, but qualified
for Regionals in both nevertheless. The information Campus Equestrian has for Region 2 is
incomplete. However we can tell you that Virginia Intermont graduate Joleen DeWitt and
Southern Illinois at Carbondale alum Joanne Numrich survived Region 2 Regionals in alumni
flat. Iowa State graduate and Head Coach Meaghan McLoughlin was the first rider in Region 2
to qualify for Regionals but apparently was third at Regionals in alumni flat. Numrich and
Northwest Missouri State graduate Diedra Webb (who was Deidra Weldon when the season
started) both advanced from Region 2 Regionals to Zone 9 Zones in both stock seat divisions
(Region 2 did not hold any alumni fences classes during 2004-05 to the best of our
knowledge).
University of Minnesota at Crookston graduate (and current Ellsworth Community College
Head Coach) Andrew Hinrichs, University of Wisconsin at Madison graduate Kristin Foster and
Mount Holyoke graduate Andrea Bill all qualified for Region 3 Regionals in the alumni
Western divisions. The unusual part here is that Bill never rode western until this season
(Mount Holyoke is in Zone 1, where there has never been any Stock Seat). Bill lead the
Region 3 hunter seat alumni divisions though Wesleyan University graduate Lauren McCarthy gave Bill a
run for her money in alumni fences. When Zones took place on April 17th Sappenfield won
both hunter seat alumni divisions, Bill took reserve in alumni fences, Yates took reserve in
alumni flat, Hinrichs won the alumni rail, Hinrichs was second to Foster in alumni reining
and Webb was second to Hinrichs in alumni rail.
With Zones 6 and 9 having completed their Zones the list of qualifiers for 2005 IHSA
Nationals in Sunbury, Ohio was complete. On May 6th (which was the second day of the
National show) three of the four alumni classes which would determine the National Champion
took place. The day began at 8:37AM with alumni fences, as Meisinger went first...
Less than an hour later the division was complete. Schaaf placed tenth, a bit of a
surprise considering she was undefeated the longest during the Fall portion of the Zone 1,
Region 4 schedule. Even more surprisingly was that ninth went to Bill, who had placed
inside the top three in at least one alumni division at each of the previous three IHSA
National shows. Blackford was eighth, while McCabe, who had been third in the same
division a year ago, was seventh. Biggar, making her first Nationals apperance of any kind,
took sixth. Sappenfield, who apparently did not reach Nationals as an undergraduate, took
fifth. Barbieri, also riding at Nationals for the first time, was fourth. Meisinger had
gone first, but would earn third place for her nice ride. Prettyman earned her finest IHSA
Nationals placing to date, getting the red reserve ribbon.
The champion of the division was a three-time Cacchione Cup participant from 1997-99
(each time in the top ten). The 1999 Stonehill graduate is currently an Albany, New York
resident, attending to matters at the Albany Medical Center. Will she be listed in the 2006
IHSA Nationals program as Dr. Emily Unger? Perhaps, but for now Unger is known as Champion
of the alumni fences at 2005 IHSA Nationals.
Alumni who had to compete in both hunter seat divisions at 2005 Nationals didn't have to
stay dressed all that long. Three classes later was the alumni flat, with nine of the
fifteen competitors returning from the fences division. Tenth went to Schaefer, who would
not be the only Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo rider to make the top ten. Ninth went to
Sappenfield while Abbott of UConn placed eighth in her IHSA Nationals debut. Sanger-Katz,
who rode with McCabe in the New York Metropolitan area growing up, got the better of the
Vandy alum in this division with a seventh. Kovatch, who attended 2002 IHSA Nationals,
earned sixth while Park of Hiram moved up to a fifth in alumni flat after having finished
out of the ribbons in the division a year ago. Phillips, who was second in alumni flat and
fences at 2004 Nationals, was fourth. Unger did not make it two-for-two, settling for third
here. Biggar, the first Hamilton rider in the teams' brief history to reach Nationals, took
reserve.
She had competed at Nationals in both 1999 and 2001. Her sisters showed at Nationals in
2001 and this season. Elise Sproul, the 2001 individual intermediate equitation on the flat
champion, took home another blue ribbon, as the Beaufort, South Carolina resident was alumni
on the flat champion.
The next-to-last class of the Friday session was alumni western horsemanship, a.k.a., the
alumni rail. Prettyman was the only rider from any of the earlier divisions to compete
(the former University of Maryland standout was the only alumni to compete all four times)
and would finish out of the ribbons here. Boulerice was tenth while Webb earned the first
Nationals ribbon of any kind for a Northwest Missouri State rider, graduate or otherwise,
with a ninth. Hendricks was eighth, while Brannon became the only rider to compete in this
division two years in a row and make the top ten both times, placing seventh. Former
teammate Schultz was sixth while Washington of Fresno placed fifth. Saigo, who had been
listed in some regular season programs as from Ohio State (with whom she practices) placed
fourth. Fistner was ninth in the AQHA Cup last season but earned a third here. Only two
riders remained in the ring when Hinrichs was announced as reserve.
Perhaps the most surprised person at the four-day 2005 IHSA Nationals was the winner of
this class. Zone 3 has never performed all that well at Nationals in stock seat. Bucking
that trend was Silkotch, becoming the first Rutgers rider since at least the mid-1980's to
win a class outright and the first stock seat rider from Zone 3 to ever to win a blue
ribbon at IHSA Nationals. Silkotch had covered her mouth in shock when Hinrichs was
announced as reserve and kept it there all the way to the winner's circle for the official
photos!

University of Wisconsin at Madison alumni Kristin Foster (left) needs
help from Sandy Sayre (right) to hold up all the trophies she won via a blue ribbon in
alumni reining. Sayre, who is the Drew University Assistant Coach, was in charge of
getting all Nationals winners to sign for their trophies (which must be returned prior
to 2006 Nationals). |
The Saturday session included the final alumni division, the alumni reining. With only
thirteen entries, the chances were if you did not overspin or go off your pattern you
would be assured a ribbon. Surprisingly, four riders earned scores of zero for
making one of these two mistakes. Good news for each is that this created a four-way tie
for tenth, and thus each of these ten riders will receive the official tenth place
ribbon. Kovatch, Boulerice, Prettyman and yesterday's champion Silkotch were all tenth
while Oswego Head Coach Fereday earned ninth with an actual score (too bad we don't have
the scores from this class-ed). Beidelman, who was accidentally listed as a Yale graduate
in the program, was eighth. Smith was the first Jennifer from Florida with a ribbon,
taking seventh. Foster was the second Jennifer from Florida and the first of two Fosters
in the class (not related) with a ribbon, placing sixth. Hendricks, who was the 2003
Zone 8, Region 1 AQHA Cup representative while still at Bakersfield College, was fifth.
Hinrichs slipped down to fourth this time. Saigo become the third Florida gator inside
the top ten with a third. Fistner moved up a place to reserve, her finest ribbon of any
kind at an IHSA Nationals show.
Though their hunter seat team has grabbed most of the headlines the past few seasons,
alumni stock seat rider Kristin Foster took the blue ribbon. Foster joins Michelle Gagat
of Findlay, Jill Soronen of Ohio State, Eric Hubbard of the College of Southern Idaho
(who won the class twice) and Cathy Cumberworth, Miguel Maes and Rachel Knight all from
New Mexico State as only the seventh rider to win alumni reining since the division was
introduced at Nationals in May of 1998.
