UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO CAPTURES THEIR FIRST HUNTER SEAT REGION CHAMPIONSHIP

(Stephanie Kupper, who not only pointed out of both hunter seat intermediate divisions early in the season but was apparently among the top ten in the Region 1 open rider standings, has submitted a press release regarding the University of Colorado's final three regular season shows and Regionals. Though the Buffs trailed Colorado College by a point through the fall shows, the two were tied after a pair of shows hosted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha - Editor)

After a tiring five-hundred mile drive, the University of Colorado Equestrian Team reached Omaha, Nebraska on March 6th, ready to show on horses provided by the University of Nebraska - Omaha at the Elkhorn Equestrian Center. CU had a good day of riding on March 7th, with riders Hannah Nichols and Alissa Long winning in novice flat and Maria Lawson winning blue in advanced walk-trot-canter. CU ended up in a three-way tie for Reserve High Point Team.

The next day a determined CU rode their hardest and won High Point Team. Audrey Tobin’s big win in open fences and Stephanie Kupper’s blue in open flat helped push CU to the top. More blue-ribbon winning rides came from Lauren Kendle in intermediate flat, Long in both novice fences and novice flat, and Lawson again in advanced walk-trot-canter. There were also great rides over the weekend from Sarah Vicksman, Ashleigh Valdez, Amy Boncella, Ellen Whalen, Jessica Steiner, Jackie Mains, Andi Fieger, and Anna Bohlin.

CU riders were at the top of their game in Omaha as they closed the gap in team points, leaving the University of Colorado and Colorado College in a tie for Region 1 High Point Hunter Seat Team. This meant that the point rider show to come on March 14th would determine Zone 7, Region 1’s High Point Team.

On Friday, March 13th, the CU Team drove to Colorado Springs’ MM Ranch to help set up and warm up horses for the following day’s morning horse show and afternoon Regional competition. CU had great fences rounds with a win by Audrey Tobin in open. On the flat there were great rides from Whalen and Long and three more blues from Tobin, Ashleigh Valdez in walk-trot, and Kendle in intermediate.

After the morning show, which concluded the regular season for Region 1, Laramie County Community College Head Coach and Region President Lanae Koons announced that the University of Colorado will represent Region 1 at Zone 7 Zones in Cheyenne, WY, competing head-to-head with Region 2 Champion West Texas A & M on April 5th (The winner will advance to IHSA Nationals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee May 23-26). It will be the first time the University of Colorado will field a full hunter seat team at Zones. Having earned the most combined flat and fences points within the region at the open level, Tobin will represent Region 1 at Nationals in the Cacchione Cup Competition.

Regionals began with three fences classes, during which Tobin (in open) and Kupper (intermediate) advanced to Zones individually. Tobin later advanced to Zones in open flat, while Kupper advanced in intermediate flat. Kendle (intermediate flat), Jordan Olmsted (novice flat), Lindsey Pope (also in novice flat) and Valdez (walk-trot) also survived Regionals. After a long day’s work, the victorious CU Equestrian Team packed up our things, loaded up the trailer, and headed home for some well-deserved rest.
