MIAMI OF OHIO WINS HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT BY TWO OVER HOST FINDLAY
Findlay, OH - Though they trailed going into the final class, Miami of Ohio prevailed as high point team at the 2003 IHSA Holiday Tournament of Champions in Findlay, OH December 7th. Miami of Ohio sophomore open rider Megan Palmer, who has been quite successful in both invitationals and the post-season, won the final class to put the red hawks ahead of the host oilers, 34-32. It marked the second time this season in the tournament of champion series that the host school placed second.

Unlike previous tournaments, their was an additional day of "Championship Classes" which added more points to the team totals than the usual eight divisions. On day one (December 6th), two sections of each division were held, with the usual ribbons awarded. However the top three in each section were invited back for a Grand Champion class the next day. The winner in each division's grand champion class added three points to their team's total. Reserve added two points and third a point. Palmer, who had placed second on day one in her open flat class, won the grand champion section to boost the Red Hawks over the oilers.

Also high into the ribbons for the red hawks were Stefanie Fink (first in walk-trot), Lindsay Krol (second in walk-trot-canter) Lindsay Barton (second in novice flat) and Matt Arrigon, son of head coach Jim Arrigon, with a second in novice fences. Findlay was led by Mara Keith Hunter (1st in both her regular intermediate flat class and the grand championship class), Aubrey Hunt (second in both open fences and grand champion open fences), Katie Humphreys (second in walk-trot and third in walk-trot grand championship) and Ashley Gallo (third in both walk-trot-canter and the walk-trot-canter grand championship). Virginia Intermont, which had placed second at the pre-season Tournament of Champions, placed third with 30 points.

Perhaps the most interesting story was fourth place. Fresno State, led by Michelle Tonello (first in both of her open classes on day one), finished only five points off the lead. Chuck Smallwood's bulldogs scored 28 of their 29 points on day one, and may have won outright under the normal one-day formula. This was Fresno State's finest Tournament of Champions performance since the series was launched in 1992.

Judge Sabina Oldaker Chambers had only one alumni class to judge, though the class included both a flat phase and a jumping phase. A pair of Mount Holyoke graduates placed one-two, with Gillian McPhee edging Rosemary Alonso for the blue ribbon. Colorado State head coach Tiare Wells showed IHSA for the first time this season, placing third. Ironically, with each having ridden in at least four fall shows headed into the invitational, Delaware Valley College assistant hunter seat coach Joanne Coniglio and University of Connecticut graduate Liz Lopez placed fourth and fifth respectively.
