Seen here earlier this season, open rider Corrine
Davies of Sweet Briar was one of four vixen riders to advance to Zone 4
Zones during the Region 1 Regional show on April 3rd.
ZONE 4, REGION 1 REGIONALS RESULTS
Sweet Briar, VA - Even though they were the third, fourth and fifth best
teams in Zone 4, Region 1 during the regular season, the College of William &
Mary, Sweet Briar College and St. Mary's College of Maryland will each
receive four rides at Zone 4 Zones in Laurinburg, North Carolina on April 9th.
Host Sweet Briar will have the most riders, as Katie Parnell (first in novice
fences), Corinne Davies (second in open flat), Kristi Hanley (second in
advanced walk-trot-canter) and Jo Gormley (third in the same class as Hanley)
all made the top three in their respective divisions. Mike Gaches of
St. Mary's advanced twice, placing second in intermediate flat and third in
novice fences, while seahawk teammates Diane Zrimsek won open flat and Doria
Fleisher placed third in novice flat. The College of William & Mary earned
one of their rides at Zones before ever setting foot on the Sweet Briar
campus, as Carrie Veneman was the only Region 1 rider to qualify for the
post-season in intermediate fences. Veneman did ride today, placing third in
intermediate flat while tribe teammates Maggie Johnson (novice flat) and
Emily Carper (walk-trot) placed second in their divisions.
The show actually began with a class that did not count towards Zones.
Both Zrimsek and Maisy Grassie of Goucher College finished the season seven
points behind high point open rider Lydia Davies, also of Goucher (and not
related to Sweet Briar's Corrine Davies). IHSA rules normally require a tie
for reserve in the Cacchione race be broken with a ride-off, which is done in
the event the high point open rider cannot attend Nationals for some reason.
Zrimsek and Grassie rode off at the beginning of the
day, with Zrimsek winning. Grassie was not done just yet, placing third in
both of the open divisions, thus earning a pair of rides at Zones.
We didn't know, but now we do!: What happens if you ride in a region
where the top three in each division go on to Zones, and only three qualify
for Regionals in that division? Answer: All three go on to Zones! But what if the
class is held at Regionals, and one of the riders qualified does not
participate? Answer: Since all three qualified, all three AUTOMATICALLY
are qualifed for Zones whether they ride at Regionals or not. Today's
walk-trot division only featured Carper and Ashley Brewer of Christopher
Newport University. Brewer won, with Carper second, but Layne Havens of Mary
Washington is technically third. Havens qualifed, but was not enterred in
today's show. Havens still joins teammates Jessica Mangun (second in open
fences) and K.D. Klepper (first in novice flat) as an individual qualifier at
Zone 4 Zones. And we would be remiss if we did not mention that the eagles
have an entire team entered to do battle with Hollins (from Region 2) and
Virginia Intermont (from Region 3).
