YALE TAKES LEAD IN CLOSE REGION 1 RACE

Westbrook, CT - On Sunday, February 27th, the Yale Equestrian Team showed
what it’s known all year: That it is capable of staying with anyone in Zone 3,
Region 1. Winning their home show with a solid 41 points, the Yale Equestrian
Team propelled itself into first place in the Region, moving ahead of CW Post
and St. Joseph’s who entered the day in second and first place, respectively.
With only one more show to go, the Yale Team leads the Region by 15 points and
is aiming for its first team trip to Zone Finals in team history.
Yale’s point team posted wins in Walk Trot Canter (Donnell Gavin), Novice
Flat (Sarah Kellner), Novice Fences (Kellner), and Intermediate Fences
(Rebecca Krauss), with second place finishes in Walk Trot (Melissa Gonzales)
and Open Flat (Captain Elizabeth Jordan). After winning both of her novice
classes, Kellner again triumphed in the ride-off against Dowling College
intermediate rider Jennie Guzzi, finishing off her perfect day with the High
Point Rider award to her name.
Yale’s closest neighbors in the region, Fairfield and Sacred Heart
Universities, tied for second place with 33 points each. Both teams were
distinguished by wins in the open division. Fairifeld’s Kristen George was
the winner on the flat, while region Cacchione Cup leader Kate Janczak
finished first over fences and second on the flat.
As it was Yale’s home show, a few extras were offered: An upper level “Pick
Your Prize” flat challenge class was run, with Yale captain, Liz Jordan taking
the top prize. Three Yalies finished in the top six in this class!
This year, Yale added a horsemanship class to its show. This class
consisted of a written test, the rider’s numerical score over fences, and a
practical portion. The practical portion included some bitting questions,
questions about feed and nutrients, and a temperature taking section.
Fairfield’s Jocelyn Abbate triumphed in this class, followed by her teammate
George.
Finally, Yale awarded the “Best Horse Award” for the third year in a row to
honor the animals who cooperate and make all this possible. This year’s
winner was Shadey, a large pony who competed mostly in the novice division.
Shadey is owned by Sue Horn of River’s Edge Farm in Bethany, CT (where Yale
co-hosted a show in the fall with Fairfield and Sacred Heart).
And once again, Yale was able to offer some fantastic prizes due to the
great generosity of our many donors. Thanks to all the horses and people who
made this show possible and best of luck to Yale at the season’s final show at
the Thomas School of Horsemanship on March 20th.
