From left to right are Anna Cardelfe (Villanova), Cary Hundley (Goucher), Jesse Fortier (St. Lawrence), Ursula "Ula" Green (Skidmore), Victoria "Tori" Bauer (College of Charleston), Chase Boggio (Tufts), Ryan Genn (Savannah College of Art & Design), Alex Carlton (University of Vermont), Abby Bertelson (Stanford) and Lauren Henry (University of Rhode Island). These riders made up the top ten in the Cacchione Cup at 2016 IHSA Nationals on May 7, 2016. Boggio was the best out of 37 riders entered. You will have to read the article to find out where the other nine in this photo placed.

BUST OPEN THE TIME CAPSULE: SCAD WINS HUNTER SEAT, BERRY AND ST. ANDREWS TIE FOR TOP WESTERN HONORS AT '16 IHSA NATIONALS

LEXINGTON, KY - Many years ago the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (or IHSA) held their 2016 National year-end show at what was a state-of-the-art facility at the time known as the Alltech Arena on the property of the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. At this particular time in the IHSA's history, 16 hunter seat teams and nine western teams competed for the right to be called the best team in the entire IHSA for the 2015-16 school year. All 25 of these teams were high point teams within their IHSA Regions, and after eight hunter seat Zones shows and three western Semifinal shows the list of schools with a full team in Lexington was set.

For the second year in a row the school which won the region known as Zone 5, Region 5 for hunter seat went on to win the National team championship for that discipline. Savannah College of Art & Design, coached by Ashley Henry, scored 36 points which put them far ahead of reserve champion Mount Holyoke College with 20. "SCAD" as they are known to many who don't have time to say all five words and the "&" symbol, saw three of their team riders win classes with each victory on a different day. Quinn Lowsky (junior, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada) won team novice flat on Thursday, May 5th; Mikayla Colson (sophomore, Dawsonville, Georgia) won team walk-trot on Friday the 6th and Ryan Genn (senior, Cincinnati, Ohio) ended the team competition with a first in open flat on Saturday the 7th. The wins for these three riders alone gave SCAD one more point than Mount Holyoke, who were led by walk-trot-canter rider Sabrina Fox. A sophomore from Westfield, Massachusetts, Fox won MHC's only blue ribbon, which marked a nice trend which saw their team riders place fifth, then fourth, then third and then first.

A year earlier the state of Georgia claimed both the English and Western National Champion team. Berry College was once again technically the champion Western Team, giving them national titles for the third time in six seasons. However the IHSA does not break ties for High Point Team at their year-end National show, which meant that both Berry and St. Andrews University shared the title. From the town of Laurinburg, North Carolina, St. Andrews captured their first-ever team National Title of any kind, as both Berry and St. Andrews scored 19 points in a wild competition which saw five of the nine teams entered sit in first place at some point during the show (either in a tie or briefly with the lead all to themselves). So close was the team competition that seven of the nine teams were mathematically alive for a share of the National Title going into the final team class. Ironically the final team class was won by Rachel Nordby of Oregon State (freshman, Bend, Oregon), one of the two teams that was mathematically eliminated ahead of the final western team class. However Nordby's blue ribbon for Oregon State technically lifted them to fourth place. St. Andrews was led by Jordan Belanger (sophomore, King, North Carolina), whose blue ribbon effort late in the day on May 7th was SAU's only team placing above third. Berry had one blue ribbon winner, as AnnaLee Cooley (sophomore, Thomasville, Georgia) prevailed in team advanced western horsemanship early in the day on May 8th. However had a tiebreaker system been used and if it had been most blue ribbons followed by most red ribbons then the 2015 champs would have had the edge. Berry freshman Sarah Cooper was second in team novice western while Elizabeth Poczobut closed out her junior year by finishing second to Nordby in team open western horsemanship. It is worth noting that "one class does not a team competition maketh," as neither St. Andrews nor Berry earned any team points in the team open reining division which started the western portion of the show.

Carla Wennberg (on left) judged the Western portion of 2000 IHSA Nationals with Mark Sheridan (not pictured). 16 years later Wennberg became the first person ever to have judged at Nationals and later coach an IHSA team to a National Championship. On the right is Jordan Belanger of St. Andrews University, whose first in team beginner western horsemanship was the only team blue ribbon for Wennberg's co-National Champions over the course of six team classes. Defending western champion Berry College tied for high point with St. Andrews at 19 points each.

Back in 2016 there were a heck of a lot of individual classes, both hunter seat and western, at IHSA Nationals. There were even classes to determine the best hunter seat and western riders for the entire year, respectively. The Cacchione Cup competition, which determined the best hunter seat rider, was won by one of the most respected open riders of the past three seasons. Chase Boggio, a Tufts University senior from Atlanta, Georgia, had the top combined hunter seat Judge's score (an 89) in the fences phase and later won out in a work-off versus the College of Charleston's Victoria Bauer (senior, Santa Clarita, California) and Genn, who finished second and third, respectively. Boggio became the third rider in the history of the Tufts Equestrian Team to win the Cacchione class, with Haley Phillips having done so in 2000 and Peter Wylde (who later competed for the USET at the Olympics) in 1986.

In 2016 the top Western Individual prize was called the AQHA High Point Western Rider, and after both a rail phase and a reining phase the winner was Michelle McDowell of Grand Valley State University. A junior from Wayland, Michigan, McDowell was competing at an IHSA Nationals event for the second time (previously we indicated this was her first appearance, but McDowell was tenth in individual advanced western horsemanship at 2014 Nationals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania). McDowell achieved the rare feat of earning the top combined Judge's score in both the Reining and Rail Phases. Codi Uecker of Rocky Mountain College (freshman, Lewistown, Montana) was the reserve champion and may have had the runner-up rail phase score. Third place went to Kayla Magrum of the University of Findlay (sophomore, Tiffin, Ohio), who like Uecker was a newbie at IHSA Nationals. This was in stark contrast to the higher ribbons in the Cacchione class, as each of the top five finishers there had competed previously in an IHSA Nationals event while the top six were made up entirely of seniors.

While Boggio went out on top he had already won a blue ribbon earlier in the four-day event. There were eight individual hunter seat classes and Boggio won the kick-off on May 5th which was individual open over fences. Six different geographic Zones (out of eight during the 2015-16 season) could claim a hunter seat individual champion, with Boggio representing Zone 1 (and Region 4 to be specific). Morgan Sollenberger of Emory & Henry College could claim she went undefeated at IHSA Nationals, as the senior from Charlotte, North Carolina won individual novice fences one year after winning individual novice flat. Sollenberger came from Zone 4 (Region 2, though E&H will move to a different region for 2016-17) while Rachel McConnell of Miami University of Ohio - from Zone 6, Region 2 - won the first individual flat class. A junior from Powell, Ohio, McConnell won out over 15 others in individual intermediate on the flat. She would not be the only Zone 6 rider to win individually, as Erin Deans of Michigan State University won individual walk-trot-canter. A junior from Grand Rapids, Deans competed in Zone 6, Region 4, the same region as McDowell had done so in Western shows during the regular season. Zone 5 had a blue thanks to SCAD junior Meredith Denny. From Knoxville, Tennessee, Denny took first place in individual novice flat. Seven of the eight individual hunter seat classes were held on May 5th, and Jesse Fortier of St. Lawrence University won individual open on the flat to round out those seven. It was the first IHSA Nationals appearance for Fortier, a senior from Candia, New Hampshire. Fortier would also go on to place 6th in the Cacchione Cup Competition. Zone 8 managed a pair of blues. Alexandra "Lexie" Smallwood of Santa Clara University (junior, San Diego, California) won the individual intermediate over fences held between classes won by Boggio and Sollenberger. While these seven riders won on May 5th, individual walk-trot rider Sarah Lindsay of Stanford University had to wait until Friday afternoon on the 6th to win her blue ribbon. A senior from Denver, Colorado, Lindsay's win made Zone 8, Region 1 the only region for hunter seat with two blue ribbons at the undergraduate level in Lexington.

Prior to 2016 Nationals schools from 12 different states had produced at least one Western High Point Rider for a full season. However that number grew to 13 on May 8th as Michelle McDowell added Michigan to the list. Seen here with her Mother (and many prizes), McDowell earned the top combined rail score on May 7th and the top combined reining score on May 8th to clearly put her on top in a field of 25 and made the then-junior at Grand Valley State University the indivdual AQHA High Point Rider within the IHSA for 2015-16.

The Individual Western classes were heavy on the final day of Nationals but light on two others (Note: The schedule of classes was once again all-English on May 5th and all-Western to conclude the four days on May 8th). The first undergraduate individual western class was open horsemanship, and this division was the last held on the 6th (the results were announced around 9:10PM). The last rider to hear her name called was Hanna Hedderick of the University of Findlay. A sophomore from Hudson, Ohio, Hedderick had just missed winning the individual advanced western division a year earlier with a second. This time around Hedderick was the champion. The National Reining Horse Association-sponsored individual open rening took place relatively early in the day on May 7th, with Leah Piper of Middle Tennessee State University earning an announced score of '142' to earn the blue ribbon. A sophomore from Carthage, Tennessee, Piper won on a day where three of the 12 entries either went off pattern, over-spun or under-spun for zero scores. Kelsey Wilson of West Texas A & M University was second, Dylan Dombrowski of Cazenovia College third and Sarah Yu of Ohio State fourth in the only class that is not the final ride of the year for the top four. The NRHA invites the top four in this division to join eight other riders (four from the NCEA and four at-large selections) to compete at "The Derby" in Oklahoma City every year. When the NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship was held on June 30th Yu was 11th, Piper ninth, Wilson fifth and Dombrowski fourth in the class which truly marks the end of the 2015-16 IHSA season.

Four of the final five classes held on the final day of 2016 Nationals were the remaining individual western classes. Bailey Peterson of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln was the first of two Zone 8 riders to earn an individual blue ribbon on May 8th, the sophomore from Denton, Nebraska prevailing in individual advanced horsemanship. Dillon Vaughn of St. Andrews University had placed fourth in team novice western on May 6th. On the 8th the sophomore from Gastonia, North Carolina won the individual intermediate horsemanship to improve on the prior performance. With only three classes left Zone 7 had yet to produce an individual class blue ribbon winner be it Western or English. Bethany Kizer of North Central Texas College then proceeded to win beginner western horsemanship. A sophomore from Aubrey, Texas Kizer not only provided Zone 7 (Region 2) with their only individual blue of the long weekend it was the first time in the history of the North Central Texas program that one of their riders won a class at an IHSA Nationals event. The final rider to win a class at 2016 Nationals was Kellsie Knolin of Oregon State University. A senior from Tigard, Oregon, Knolin gave Oregon State two wins in as many classes, as Nordby won the team open western class less than an hour earlier. The runner-up to Knolin was Jarret Vaughn, a St. Andrews junior who happens to be the brother of teammate Dillon Vaughn. Though Jarret was only the reserve champion he was likely happy that the St. Andrews team was a co-National Champion for the first time.

As had been the case every year since 1998 there were four Alumni Divisions held. For the eighth year in a row Alumni over fences was the first class of the day during the Friday session. 2013 Cornell University graduate Emily Kowalchik was the 12th rider out of 16 to navigate the alumni jumps and her score of '85' proved to be the winner. Much later in the day (after 7:00PM) the Alumni Western Horsemanship division was won by Caitlin "Katy" Arthur. A 2014 graduate of Saginaw Valley State University, Arthur remained unbeaten in the division at Nationals. Arthur won the same class in '15 and joined former New Mexico State rider Miguel Maes as the only individuals ever to win the Alumni Western class at Nationals in consecutive seasons (Maes, who legend has it went from beginner western through multiple divisions to open western at his final undergraduate regular season show, won the class in both 2000 and 2001). Alumni flat was the final hunter seat class of any kind at '16 Nationals. Held around 2:00PM on Saturday the 7th, 2015 Virginia Tech graduate Kayleigh Burke emerged as the winner. A day earlier Burke was fifth in alumni fences in what was her IHSA Nationals alumni debut. The final alumni class ended much earlier than expected. The Alumni Reining was placed at 6:13PM on Saturday evening, a good 25 minutes before the start of the Kentucky Derby (five years earlier this same class was halted at the Kentucky Horse Park so that the Derby could be shown on television by way of the scoreboard which doubles as a TV/internet connection). One year earlier Morgan Sykes of the University of Central Florida tied for the second-highest reining score in the reining phase of the individual AQHA High Point competition with a score of '142.5.' In his first time showing in alumni reining the 2015 graduate received a score of only '138.5.' However this was still good enough that Sykes was one whole point ahead of former University of Kentucky rider Anna Johnson (the reserve champion as it turned out). Sykes thus won and became the first western rider from a school located in the state of Florida ever to win a Individual Western Class (be it an undergraduate or alumni rider) at an IHSA National event.

Come to think of it, 2016 Nationals doesn't seem all that long ago.

He went out on top! Ryan Genn of Savannah College of Art & Design is seen here with his Mother following horse draw for the final hunter seat team class held at 2016 Nationals, the open flat. It was sort of a homecoming for Genn, who is from Cincinnati, Ohio which is a 90 minute drive from the Kentucky Horse Park. Genn won the class, but his SCAD teammates had already done so well that the team went into the division having already clinched a second consecutive Hunter Seat National Championship.

The 2016 IHSA Nationals Class-by-Class Results, held at Alltech Arena within the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky May 5th through 8th. The Classes are listed in the order in which they were held. The hunter Seat Judges were Carole O'Brien and Julie Winkel while the Western Judges were Gretchen Mathes and Kim Myers.

Is this a trend? AnnaLee Cooley (on horse) won Berry College's only team blue ribbon at '16 Nationals when she prevailed in advanced western horsemanship on May 8th. It was Cooley's second ride in the division, having placed second in the team class at '15 Nationals. Meanwhile Berry won their second consecutive Western Team National Championship (shared this time with St. Andrews) and by coincidence won the title inside Alltech Arena. The last time Nationals were held at Alltech Berry also won (in 2011), giving them consective titles at the facility known simply as the Kentucky Horse Park "Indoor" to many.
