COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON WINS AGAIN

Sewanee, TN - After trailing through four classes, defending Zone 5 Champion College of Charleston won three of the final four team classes to capture high point team honors with 48 points. Berry College, which led narrowly through the first four team classes, was reserve while Vanderbilt University, making their first appearence in a Zones team competition, was third with 38.

Charleston was led by Caitlin Smith, the only rider to win two team classes at today's show. A freshman from Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, Smith won both her novice flat and intermediate fences. Berry won two team classes, with Jessica Gilker winning intermediate flat to give the Vikings an early 7-5 lead while Elizabeth Leduc won the walk-trot-canter two divisions later.

For the second year in a row both the Cougars and the Vikings advanced a full team to IHSA Nationals, to take place this season at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, California May 8th through 11th. Though Vanderbilt did not advance a full team, the Commodores will have Sarah Hamburger competing at Nationals in individual novice flat while Whitney Goulart had already secured a place in the 2008 Cacchione Cup Competition. Goulart was also the only Commodore to win a team class, best in the open fences.

Region 2 riders faired the best in individual undergraduate classes, with seven riders from four schools placing inside the top two and thus advancing to Nationals. Berry secured the most individual rides of any school in the zone, as Megan Erikson was second in both novice divisions while teammate Rachel Besch was second in individual walk-trot-canter.

Besch finished second to Meredith Guider, who is the first rider in Mississippi College history to qualify for IHSA Nationals. Guider is one of five Region 1 undergraduate riders to qualify, with five schools from this region represented. University of the South freshman Lindsay Maxwell was the only rider to win two individual classes, earning blue ribbons in open flat and fences.

Middle Tennessee State graduate Jaclyn Cradduck was the alumni star, earning a blue ribbon in alumni flat to start the day while placing second to 2007 Charleston grad Erin Boles in alumni fences to end the proceedings. Cradduck was one of a small number of riders who rode both inside and outside at today's show, as heavy fog forced most of the classes indoors and altered the original order of classes planned for Zones.
